After reading Vol Nation a bit this morning I need to set the record straight for that group of disrespectful idiots.
You guys are young and unproven.
You do not have that much more speed than we do.
Griz have a size advantage on both the DL and the OL.
You guys have your starting stud LB (Lathers) from last year, missing this game with a foot injury.
Griz have a RB that is just as fast as anything you will see all year.
Griz have a DB that will shut down one side of the field, the NFL is saying this....not just us.
Griz have 5 FBS dropdowns all of which would make your team and some would start.
Griz have the advantage at TE, OL, DL and possibly LB
Vols have the humidity and depth.....................
Your team plays in the SEC and that makes them:
Arrogant
Loud
Misinformed
Cocky
Rude
and disrespectful
But it sure as hell doesnt make you any better than any team in the top 50..........and most honest people know that. Thats why you are ranked right where you are.
Take some advice and just shut your mouths about how good you are and how bad you will win, you look stupid and sound like you are from the south. Nobody anywhere that matters cares what you guys think on your board or in the office.
Posters like Big Orange, White Winter, and Woodsman....possibly a few others are representing your team with class but the posters on your board ruin the image guys like that are trying to hold up. We keep hearing about how "classy" and "passionate" your fans are but in reality most of them that post on Vol Nation are a bunch of loudmouthed punks that have no clue about football other than what CBS tells them "SEC is the best conference"
Everyone that knows football knows that if there was a playoff system that didnt favor the powers schools the way the FBS does........the SEC would rarely see a championship of any kind, so you VOl Nation fans can totally relate because the last time UT was relevant was in the 90s.
Psst its 2011

That is the thing that they don't understand...Montana IS D-I! Montana's starters are going to be talented...maybe not SEC talented but definitely not worse than UT-Martin or Vanderbilt. The biggest thing that will sink the Griz will be depth. By the 2nd half Tennessee should wear down Montana with the quality of their 2nd and 3rd stringers...I say should.
People need to remember that Iowa only led the Griz 17-7 at the end of the 3rd before they began pounding it at Montana. The Griz need to put some points up and put more pressure on Tennessee to see if they will fold...man I wish I was going....

It was 17-0 at the half and 24-7 at the end of the 3rd qtr..........I was there.
Also remember Iowa was ranked 16th in the AP pre season poll and we lost Lex Hilliard to an achilles injury during fall ball. If we would have had Lex to pound at them all day the outcome would have probably been the same but the score sure as hell wouldnt have been anymore than 27-14.
Man Iowa easily has the best fans I have ever been around, before, after and even on a message board nothing but class. You just dont find a fan base like that very often...................CLASS.

Thanks Alpha. I just remember watching that game and - if the Griz could have moved the ball a little more - with Lex, they would have hung closer with Iowa. That Iowa team was very talented that year and Montana played well, just ran out of gas!

I think I have posted this multiple times on here I will say it again for anyone that missed it, any intelligent Tennessee fan knows where we stand this year. Yes, you are D-1 but it's one 1-AA, it IS a step down (no offense intended) but there isn't a talent discrepancy like some of our fans make it seem like there is.
I'll attempt to explain exactly WHY some Vol fans are so sure that we are going to pound you by listing the units they are especially excited about.
OL- Full of big, strong, powerful guys but they are all Sophmores. They will be able to compete with just about anyone strength and size wise but their youth will occasionally hurt them and they will screw up a blocking assignment. Don't expect to have many advantages really here.
RB - Tauren Poole was inconsistent at best last year. Our gains on the ground would go 1, 3, 58, 2. With this OL bigger, stronger, and more experienced, Poole will be able to shine this year if he is as good as he looks. For all we know, that could just be him and it wasn't the OL at all. But if our OL manages to push around DLs, Tauren could have a pretty big year.
WR - This is perhaps the most exciting position and there is a ton to be excited about. Starting out, there is Justin Hunter, a 6'4, 185 pound guy with legitimate track athlete ability. He will have to choose between football and training to for the Olympics soon if that tells you anything. His body type is similar to A.J. Green in that he is very thin but can run like lightning and jump out of the stadium. This is who I expect Trumaine to match up with seeing as how he had the best year last year and that will be very exciting to see. Next, we have Da'Rick Rogers. He is totally the opposite build from Justin. Think T.O. kind of body shape. He is 6'3 and is just as fast as Hunter but will play a different role. Because he is 6'3, 220, unlike Hunter, he will be asked to come over the middle and make tough catches in traffic. You will not find 2 WRs with more upside then these two guys and if you do, they won't be on the same team and just Sophmores. Trumaine will probably have Justin locked down but good luck with Da'rick if he does.
QB - We have a 6'6, 200 pound guy with a cannon for an arm who is totally fearless in the pocket despite his small frame. If he can slightly improve his accuracy and study up on the game a little more than last year (and all reports that I've seen say he has), then he will be the next great one and a Heisman candidate by his junior year.
The Defense overall is a big weakness. Mostly LB (where you definitely have the advantage) and DL where y'all have a slight advantage. DB is one of the best on the conference and will be able to lock down most passing games.
Here's the deal. Tennessee is a traditional powerhouse that has fallen on very hard times (The worst 10 year stretch in our history iirc) Anyone who knows college football can see that Tennessee is on the way back up but unfortunately, to get there, we have to go through some growing pains. This squad is one of the youngest, most unproven squads I've seen on any team since I've been watching football. They also have a ridiculous amount of talent. That is why our fans are so sure that we will put you away. They see these things and thing "well damn, look at all this talent we have, surely we can Montana away." They are desperate because we haven't had any hope in close to a decade. If they talk crap, it's probably because they are unsure of whether or not we will actually do well. Don't take it personally, it's not just your program. In fact, the well educated Tennessee fans I've spoken to have a ton of respect for what you guys have accomplished. Take what some people say as "We see light at the end of the tunnel and we desperately want to prove ourselves worthy again" and not "we think your program is trash and you suck"
Sorry for the length, I just wanted to attempt to explain why it seems like our fans are so hostile towards you. When you come to the game, your opinion will change quickly. Ask Oregon fans who came last year. The ones I have spoken to say Tennessee has some of the nicest most cordial fans they have ever been around. Don't take something that a bunch of dudes on a message board say and apply it to the whole fanbase because it simply isn't true. I think all both have a lot to learn about each other's teams and I'm hoping this game will help bridge that gap.
Also, I have trouble believing that the SEC would never win championships if there was a playoff system. Now I'm not a big SEC homer but the talent of the teams that Alabama, Florida, and LSU have put out recently really cannot be denied. I just want a playoff so everything would be fair.
Can't wait for the game. Go Vols!

Big Orange,
Nice post. The thing about I-AA is that teams get kids who were recruited and offered FBS scholarships and decided not to go there for whatever reason. Sometimes it is playing time- they want to play right away vs. redshirt. Sometimes, which helps Montana at times, is winning. Kids want to play for a winner (see Tennesssee) and Montana has beaten out FBS schools because of that history. Again, Tennessee should walk away with this because of the depth of talent but our starters will be better that some Vol fans are thinking - it is when they get worn down where you will see you 58 yard runs.
I am hoping for a good game and that, in the end, Montana earns the respect of Vol nation

Big Orange 15's post is well thought out and I agree with most of it except I think our depth gives us an advantage at every position. We are just too talented to be close to an FCS program.

Nice post BigOrange. I agree with totally in regard to UT fans. Some of my best friends live out there. As a matter of fact, I am hoping to go through Knoxville late next week for my trip back east for training for the new job. Since I wont be able to make the game now, I am at least excited about the prospects of seeing my friends. They naturally expect to win (excpet one mysteriously - think he's just so down about the UT program the last few years), and have great fun at my expense. Good chance, I'll be the guy in Griz gear, and driving a Montana rig on campus next week...lol.

I just hope that Tennessee doesnt come out of this game to banged up and dont have any serious injuries in what will be the most physical game they play in all year. I would hate to have to listen to their fans when Cincinnati or Buffalo beats them and they have to use the excuse card.
