Juann Jennings. What makes him different? He was recruited as a QB but was willing to make the conversion. Can you name me one other receiver on this team who actually fights for the football in close coverage, who shields it from picks, and who dependably can be counted on to make the catch? Can you name me one other receiver who tenaciously carries out his blocks when not a part of the play?

Why has Jennings developed while the others have not? Is it all just his own skills and natural athleticism? If it's anything to do with coaching, then why haven't the others followed his example? Even the TE's have regressed this year in the area of blocking and being reliable receivers.

There is something wrong in the development and progression at several positions. I'm not sure that Butch has gotten the support of the AD in getting the assistants he wants in terms of money, or being able to replace assistants that he might have wanted fired. I don't know what the score is, but I don't see a better football team this year despite and additional year of experience. Call it bad chemistry or whatever, but this team has been extremely fortunate to have escaped 2 additional losses and a 3-5 record as opposed to 5-3.

I can't name a receiver we've had in the last 10 years who I could say that about.

Jennings wants the ball every snap and DB's don't want to tackle him. He needs the ball so much more.

He's just s classic "football player". He could prob make it at a # of positions. Can't teach that part.

I think Byrd has it as well. I'd like to see Byrd gets snaps at corner as well. The young man has talent to be a receiver and lock down corner, let him do it. Let him have fun and watch what happens.

Good post. Our WR development, the development of our QB and passing game...it just hasn't been there. Some of it is on Dobbs--but we have a crappy passing game, there is no excuse for it, and a BIG reason has to be mediocre coaching. Guys are either hurt all the time (North, Croom), don't have any guts/heart (Williams) or in the wrong position (Croom)...it's not good. Malone has come on some, and Byrd looks like a kid who is both talented and tough. Either we simply don't have coaches who communicate well with the kids and who know how to coach them up, or we've recruited a punch of pansies/prima donnas. North, who was built like a linebacker, was injured more than a 150-pound walk-on. Williams...who knows what the problem was there. Croom should have been made a TE as a freshmen--that the coaches thought he could be a wideout was stupid. And Dobbs: I like the kid, he's had some super games, and then other games or stretches of games he plays like a freshman: We need 15 yards at least to have a decent FG chance with 18 second left the other night, and he throws a 4 yard pass. What in the hell was he thinking? What were the coaches thinking--did no one tell him: whatever you do, don't get sacked and get the ball down the field?

Our offensive line has been equally disappointing. We don't have a championship offense and we don't have top quality offensive coaching. But Jones opted to fire the DC instead. Dooh.

Pig went after it, and was dismissed. Have you seen a diving catch since Hunter, and Patterson running the wrong route, (nobody could coach him). Love JJ. But we loved Patterson cause even the other DB's never knew what he was doing. In other words, our guys are not properly prepared to catch the ball.... umm???

Pig was a pot head.... end of story.

Azzanni has not been able to develop a wide receiver at UT. :twocents:

JJ is a absolute beast.Should be targeted about 50 % of the time. He's gonna catch it knock it down or draw a penalty. One of my favorite players in a long time.

Our coaching staff didn't know what Patterson was doing half the time.

Malone Jennings and Byrd have separated themselves, and Jennings is the most complete football player -- the one with that fire. I still think Malone is the best receiver, but he had a bad day at USC especially with blocking penalties.

Look to possibly see JJ out of the backfield some. They're going to get him more touches however they can.

I wanna see JJ, Byrd, Warrior, Jack Jones and Sheriron Jones (not as a qb) on the field. They just give their all!

it is easier to teach from the ground up? I have found often that if you bring in an "experienced" person it is a lot harder to train them than someone less so. If a guy has been playing WR since pop warner basically being coached by the same group of folks and all of a sudden someone else says yeah all that is wrong.....harder hurdle. but if itys fresh its easier to teahc and also guys changing positions often have that chip on their shoulders.

Jennings reminds me of Hines ward a lot. same kind of physical WR that was originally a QB. Type of guy that gets under the defenses skin with his physical play.

I would be interested to see how these wideouts would do with an accurate passer. Don't get me wrong, I have nothing but respect for Josh Dobbs as a person, student, and team leader. But when he throws passes high, at the knees, or into the dirt, it is hard to expect your receivers to play confidently.

But yeah, Jennings is something special.

I haven't seen enough to know I wouldn't want to see Sheriron Jones at QB. But where would you put him in at? Wideout? If so, wouldn't that be crazy?

I mean, next season either Dormady or Guarantano at QB, and having Jennings and Jones out wide? Starting QB might be a leading receiver!

I think it's more chemistry than anything. Dobbs has definitely "tried to pass it" to other players but Dobbs will always look for Jennings and has definitely thrown it into "coverage"

A undeniable passion to win....somewhere along his way in life, that was ignited. He has had the "it" factor for years now (even before college).

Malone performs well if he isn't in close coverage. But I have seen him make half-hearted efforts in traffic, pointing to the defender for pass interference and hoping for a PI call instead of just fighting for the ball like Jennings does. If the defender draws a flag, it doesn't alter the way Jennings goes after the football. If Dobbs throws an errant ball where the defender is in position for a pick, Jennings will come back and take it away from the defender; or darn sure try his best.

That's where Butch and Azzani need to spotlight Jennings as an example to the other WRs and certainly the youngest ones like Bryd, Johnson and Callaway to try to attain that skill level if they want to be standouts at their position.
