Should Phillip Fulmer Have Been Fired?

They fired him 3 years too late. This garbage started when the powers that be decided to put the program on auto pilot and leave well enough alone. Leaving well enough alone got us to this point. Fire Fulmanure in 2005 like he should have been and you wouldn't bring up this pointless thread. Blame the good ole boys, they loved Fulbutt so much they let him run this program right into the dirt.

Look at how Fulmer stacked up against Miles, Spurrier, Saban and Meyer.

Look at how well Prentiss Waggner, Cody Pope, Jarrod Shaw and Art Evans have played.

That should answer the question.

Fulmer lost 6 games with a very talented team in 05.

He lost 7 games with a very experienced, talented team in 08.

It was readily apparent he couldn't get it done without Cutcliffe.

Because that 75% winning percentage was getting lower every year.
Because the national title was 10 years in the rear view.
Because the SEC east titles don't mean much to people when you sneak into the game with two L's and then don't get the title.

I agree.....I believe UT pulled the trigger in hopes of a "quick fix." Well, we realize now there is no such thing. We lost a sense of identity when Phil left, and we'll never get "that" identity back. Say what you want, Phil might have been slipping, but he hadn't fallen yet. Ive been following the Vols for 20 years, never gone through what we are now. Look at Spurrier. Many people said he was done, had lost it etc.....well, maybe not. Phil leaving took a huge "chunk" out of UT Football, and now these guys must recreate a new identity.

No, like it or not Fulmer was being beat out by a new breed of coaches. What we should have done is gone after a proven coach and gave them an offer they couldn't refuse. It took Alabama several coaches to realize this.

Yes and no IMO... Saban isn't really a new breed of coach at least I don't think so.. To be honest I don't think CUM is as good of a coach as I thought he was 3 years ago.... I always thought Tebow was over hyped, but I am starting to think he is the reason CUM had his success....

I'm not really sure who a proven coach would be.. No doubt it was a mistake hiring Kitten (He isn't doing really any better with talent at USC)..... I think CDD will get there...

CPF lead to his own demise, I'll be the 1st to say he was great in his day, but it was almost like he became to comfortable... He lost the edge, I think he has even admitted that... I have always thought that CPF needed to go, but the only reason Hamilton fired him was because he thought Kitten was the sh*t and he wanted to grab him up before anyone else did... We all know how that worked out...

The sad part to me is that I don't think we could/can get a top notch coach now.

CPF no doubt needed to go, but there scary part is that I don't think his record would have been any worse than Kitten's was last year or CDD is this year. My hope is that CDD can improve it over the coming years, that is the part that I don't think the old CPF could have done..... Especially with an 8 win contract..

Yes, yes, yes, we're so much better off. Hell we even went to the Chik-fil-a bowl last year and got drilled by an ACC team. Yeah, Kiffin was the man, he beat Florida. Oops, I forgot, he said he was GOING to beat Florida. Don't you think we may even could use Taj Boyd right now? We've came a long way baby, KY our bowl game?

Wow, the Fulmerites are coming out of the woodwork. Did you guys suffer some sort of mass amnesia, erasing the memories of Fulmer's last few years of futility?

Good thing Phil never got humiliated in a Chicken Bowl. But yeah, I guess we really could use a QB that couldn't get to 50% against Presbyterian.

Years of fultility? SECCG in '07? Years of futility? How about losing to LSU with 13 f'ing players on the field, losing by 4 td's to Georgia, who a week prior lost to Colorado. Yep, we're much better off.

The fact that the 2007 season is touted as the ultimate evidence of Fulmer's competence is enough reason to never want him back.

Yeah, you're right. Kiffin was a great hire. He's running one of the most storied, successful programs over the past decade straight into the ground. Look, even if it was CPF's time, can't Tennessee, the Big Orange, the VOLS, find a better replacement? You don't quit a job unless you find a better one, right?

That 2007 season was all smoke and mirrors. Go back and look at the results of each game and that team could have easily been in the toilet. Fulmer almost lost two in a row at home to Vandy!!! Thank goodness their kicker was a little wide.....

I guess you Fulmer lovers forget the 30-3 ass whipping at the hands of the high powered Maryland Terrapins.......and the 28-14 debacle against Clemson....the stomping at the hands of Kansas State....

Kiffin was more qualified at the time of his hiring than Phil was. The Trojans aren't great this year, but they weren't last year, either.

I guess you forget : 5,4,3,2,1 the national champion is clad in Big Orange, "Tennessee is flat laying the wood to Michigan right now", "and for the 8th consecutive year TN beats arch rival Alabama", halleluia, Tennessee has drained the swamp in Florida.

We chickened out on playing UNC next year for God's sake, and we're better off?

The Fulmersexuals are a large part of the reason why the Vols football is in the state that it is in. This program was atop the SEC and Fulmer allowed it to fall into the 2nd tier and even 3rd tier on his watch. He got lazy and refused to surround himself with quality coaches. When he did hire good coaches, he had to interfere with their work, by having his finger in the pie.

Ok, so now he's gone, and the fball program is .....better? worse? the same? what? Uh, oh, the great Urban Meyer has lost 2 in a row, better fire his ass, he's got lazy, he don't have the right coaches. He's lost 2 in a row to Saban. Run him out of Gainesville, and hire a pro coach that was fired after 4-5 games, without any experience.

If we've hired a coach capable of losing 8 games or more this season for the first time in history, this debate will get new legs.

I don't have a problem with your argument there. But to argue that we should have kept Fulmer is weak. The guy was toast.
