On Tee Martin...

Actually I can see why a qb would make a good wr coach. Afterall, if they're more of a passing qb especially, they do work more closely with the wr's than any other position so I can see how a qb could be very good at coaching them.....just makes sense to me.

Spent you enire life on a team either playing or coaching (as high as D1). You have won championships as well as underachieved.

That background has taught me that some are uncoachable. Here's to hoping that changes for you.

thats strong

Maybe all you need is to get away and come back with a fresh mind. Sometimes a little vacation can be good for the soul. Manning likes the Caribbean after his season is over every year. If I could make a suggestion.

I thought you died.
Down but not out.

I miss reading some of the better/former posters on here so I check back to see what's going on,and promoting of RW (ha). If only he would have ran that pick all the way back against Vandy. I may have been temporarily vindicated.:)

I understand he is a fan favorite, and he certainly deserves that for being apart of the '98 National Championship Team. I, however, don't see how on earth he's the most qualified coach we could get. It seems like a potential hire by Dooley for fans to be able to cheer Tee on the VolWalk rather than get someone who's a great coach. Again, I love Tee as much as everyone else; I don't see how he's the most qualified candidate. Just my take.

I agree 100%...I appreciate all he did for UT but I think he is only being brought up by some of the fans because they want some orange blood on the staff.....He is by far not the most qualified candidate.

I actually agree with you. Weird.

Probably true on qualifications, but I think he's in the top 4 or 5 choices. I can't see why anyone really solid would join CDD's staff under the current conditions, without some ridiculous amount of money.

Yeah I'm not as active myself. I think I'm too old for the new VN. Great to see you back.

Howdy, folks. My name's James, and I'm one of a handful of staffers for 247's UK affiliate, The Cats' Pause. I saw this thread and wanted to offer a bit of insight on Tee Martin's perception up here as to his coaching and recruiting ability.

-Martin is looked upon up here as UK's ace recruiter, and he's somebody Joker Phillips would really hate to see leave. A lot of the top recruits from last year's class (the first that Martin fully recruited) came from Martin's recruiting areas, including a snag on Signing Day that brought Daryl Collins' commitment from Alabama to Kentucky (Collins would have played considerably as a freshman, Martin said, if he hadn't separated his kneecap in camp and redshirted. If you watched UK any at all this year, this is apparent).

When rumblings were around last December/January about Nick Saban calling Martin about becoming the Tide's WR coach, Joker Phillips gave Martin a pretty nice extension right there on the spot. As it stands, Martin is the only coach on Phillips' staff under contract through 2014. It's important to note there is no buyout clause in his contract if Martin were to resign. I would expect he'd also want a raise over his current salary, which is $215k/year.

-As a position coach, opinions are a bit mixed. Some UK fans may tell you they aren't happy with how his receivers performed, but I'm not convinced that's his problem. He inherited a pretty rotten group of players, and the only two that were legitimate SEC talents in his first season (Randall Cobb and Chris Matthews) both vanished prior to this season.

Devoid of almost any talent among the receivers, I've used another barometer to gauge him as a position coach: Any time I've ever interviewed him after practices (which is often because he's a great quote), he always sticks around afterward talking to players to help them work things out on their own. And a lot of times, they aren't wide receivers. A lot of players that he doesn't oversee come to him for advice and motivation, even defensive players. He really connects with the guys (which is probably a lot of why he's such a good recruiter). All that said, his receivers showed some progress toward the end of the season. Matt Roark, an infamous name in Knoxville by now I would guess, was benched in the second game of the season for a series of really bad drops in or near the end zone against Central Michigan. Prior to the UT game, Roark had a pair of 100-yard receiving games on his record, which none of us could believe in Lexington.

Of course, Kentucky's quarterback situation didn't help anything with the receivers. But I think Martin is a fine position coach and a terrific person to have on a staff for a lot of different reasons.

-On a personal level, I would guess that Martin wouldn't hesitate one bit to take the job. You can tell he and his family love Lexington, and he'd be the first to say that. But Tennessee is still incredibly special to him, and I don't think it would take much to get him packing up.

Hope this sheds some light for you all on Martin. He's very well respected up here, and I would guess that Phillips would lose a lot of sleep if Martin took another job, wherever it is. - James Pennington

I'm sorry for the copy and paste but this thread was desperate for some knowledge.

Thanks. Getting what sounds like KY #1 guy in their HC eyes, to be one of our middle of the road assistants sounds plenty qualified to me.

Agreed. Good recruiter, but not sold on him as a WR coach. QB coach, maybe.

Along the same lines I'm not sure if I buy into Hinshaw coaching WR's as well.

I love T and what he did for us, but I want the best coach possible for the position.

Who has he recruited? I keep hearing he is a good recruiter but would love to see some evidence

Had 6-3star and 1-4star guys in his first class last year. Stole one from Bama on signing day. That was good enough to get him recognized as one of the top 25 national recruiters by rivals.

Tee Martin is a dumb hire. Not proven as a coach or recruiter. If he's a former Vol that's great but you don't make a coaching hire based on that fact.

Here's his tweet from this morning:

Big weekend for the future of @UKFootball.. Academic facilities tour, then on to watch the #1 team in the country vs UNC.. #BBN Let's Go!!!

The perfect hire for QB Coach or OC IMO is Jeremy Bates. Not sure why no one has mentioned him.

I like that idea. He should be a HC candidate if Dooley fails next season. I think he would be a great OC. I don't think he has ties to Dooley.
