I agreed with the call for not being a first down in the Ole Miss game when it was made. Imo it was clear as day that he didn't get that first down however what got me mad was when the refs took out strip, fumble recovery, TD away. That was 100% BS and it should have been a TD. And I agree with you on the Purdue thing. That was a TDOne final pre season thought, then it’s go time.. it’s so close now I can smell it!!
Apart from the fake injuries and the horrible calls in the Ole Miss game, the last play was not a first down. They made the right call which led to bedlam, but it was the right call. That and Corral running for about 200 on us, I can swallow that one and move on.
The Purdue game, our guy had a touchdown, and we would have won. They made the wrong call. The fact that the play didn’t stop and players were still going 100 on both sides, proves the whistle hadn’t blown yet and forward progress hadnt stopped. His knee wasn’t down before he reached the ball to the goal line. That one is still hard to get over for me.
But we persevere and press on!
Looking forward to a very very exciting season with lots of big orange wooooooos![]()

Okay, but.... none of the refs actually signaled a touchdown either. I pulled up the game on YouTube to see what happened after that 12-second clip you linked above. Interestingly, they did not blow it dead yet they did not signal a touchdown. According to the SEC league office, the referees didn't make the decision until after the play. The referees huddled after the play to make the "forward progress was stopped" determination. (Sources: article on Nashville's AtoZsports website, USA TODAY's KnoxNews website, and Sports Illustrated).
I understand what you are saying. I'm not even disputing whether this was the right or wrong call here with my comments in this thread. I just don't think it's cut-n-dried "this gets blown dead 10/10 times" is all.
Anyways, thanks for showing up and giving your well-informed insight on this topic. I'm just a fan who's tryna understand. Cheers!

I get it if it was flag football or two hand touch but he is being tackled and lost the football. That should be a touchdown every single time. I dont understand some of these new "rules". I dont care if he is going backwards, sideways, or upside down. If your being tackled and lose the ball it should be a fumble. It's football, hold on to the ball until your down or give yourself up and go to the turf. Otherwise that should be a fumble 10/10 times. That's the problem with all these new rules, it leaves too much interpretation in the officials hands. If your not down and you fumble, it should be a fumble no if's and's or but's. Forward progress is garbage and puts officials in a bad position.
Well then you need to go watch the replay again! I’m a football official, and that play would be blown dead 10/10 times. I get the orange tinted glasses, I really do. But really, he is wrapped up, driven back about 3 yards, and then the ball is stripped out. You’ve got to be kidding me to think that’s a score.
What a weak cop out. “We see how it worked out”. Yes, we did. It was the wrong call and effected the outcome of the game. Same could be said of the Pitt and Purdue fiascos respectively. Ultimately the refs lost control of that game. Kiffin played in the grey with injuries, but instead the crew blew a couple calls on the home team and almost caused a riot. Just promise me you’ll keep the poor calls out in Kansas where they belong.Believe what you believe. We see how it turned out and it was the correct call.
And that’s why officiating is one of the biggest issues facing the sport today. Too much pride from a bunch that thinks the game is on their time. You’re there to call a game, not impact it. Fans don’t come to watch zebras. That’s just it. The rule is 100% that official’s interpretation of what he saw. We have a saying - “See it twice, call it once”. When a quarterback is swallowed up and he is not fighting for more yards, he is down by interpretation. Even if he breaks loose and runs for a first down, that play is coming back to the 50. What happened on the 47 where he lost the ball doesn’t matter at all. He was being Gaylene to the ground, forward momentum was stopped, and then the ball came out. I’d be willing to be you couldn’t find a college football official in America that doesn’t rule forward momentum was stopped and the play was dead. I don’t mean to argue with everyone, but I’m just explaining why it was called the way it was.
Both games were taken from us. We won 9 games in my mind.
Exactly. The Corral strip-sack-fumble recovery decided the game. They don’t blow the call there we are running out the clock for a W at the end instead of trying to score. I think the fans were more angry about us getting screwed like that than the botched first down call. It had been boiling all night.
Still pisses me off…mostly because Barron made a beautiful play by not biting on the fake handoff and they completely stole it from him.
Watch it again; He wasn’t stripped until he was driven back about three yards. Play is over man.Again, the play being busted and Corral looking lost and being stripped doesn’t equate forward progress in my mind. I’m sure it’s a hard job. But what’s the point of replay if you can just toss it up as a judgement call?
If you believe that to be true dude, I dare you to become an official. Your eyes will be opened and you will be overwhelmed. Seriously do it.And that’s why officiating is one of the biggest issues facing the sport today. Too much pride from a bunch that thinks the game is on their time. The whole play was just strange. He wasn’t really driven back much. It was like he was carrying out a ball fake where he totally stopped and we blew it up and ripped the ball out as he spun to the ground.Watch it again; He wasn’t stripped until he was driven back about three yards. I agree it was a strange play and that is why people are in such an outrage. He was wrapped up by a couple players and they threw him around and the ball came out as he was being slung around. Play was already over at that point. The whole play was just strange. He wasn’t really driven back much.
