Ole Miss Postgame Report

I like the info most posters bring. Roustabout has good points at times but cannot hide his dislike of Barnes. Barnes is not infallible but is a very good coach. Roust brings value. Certain other posters just negative post to get reaction and bring no value to a basketball discussion. IMO.
Thank you. I like Barnes fine. I think we are fortunate to have him as a coach, considering how ****ed up our AD has handled basketball. I'm just a critical person. The whole Barnes choir boy thing doesn't move the needle for me at all. I have a lot bigger problems with the Barnes' apologists and bball forum gestapo than I do with Barnes.

Teams have bad shooting nights. I don’t know what Barnes’ routine is for insuring that players work on their shot. At one point we were a high percentage FT team. Aside from a couple of games, our three point shooting has been poor and erratic.

Previously, most of the struggles were the Vols missing open looks behind the arc. UT shot the 3 ball well, but was abysmal inside the arc. That wasn’t the main problem in the Ole Miss game. UT has zero fast break points to 15 by Ole Miss. a direct result of turnovers.

The glaring weaknesses are the inability of the team to get the ball across half court fast and get into their offense. A lack of guys who can beat their man off the dribble. We’ve seen a few teams exploit this. This is why I’m not that upset with Keon missing free throws. Kermit saw something and absolutely executed a game plan and out coached Barnes hands down.

Another glaring weakness is Fulk. His fragility is evident and he lacks the spark we’ve seen. He is obviously bothered by a lingering wrist injury, but also appears to have lost weight as well as stamina. His percentages are down, not way down, but most importantly is his lack of presence in the game. last year he did it while facing far more defensive attention since their are now more scoring options.

The lack of easy buckets. UT has seen multiple games where teams double and triple team a player and yet no one is making them pay. It was never more evident in the Ole Miss game where you could see the trap coming. Passing and keeping the ball in the middle of the court is how you make a team pay, but you had one player trapped, one trying to help and three standing around watching.

The lack of post options. It’s all but becoming a theme of how many wasted schollies will Barnes use on post players. I remember BTO arguing with my about Anosike and how rebounding and defense translate. No, they don’t. It’s not the kids fault. Barnes should know how to scout bigs and there were better options to pursue. But ultimately Barnes has spent the last couple of years trying to make up for horrible post recruiting and attrition by adding useless transfers.

I don’t see how Pons hasn’t improved his NBA stock. He is a consistent 3-point shooter. His defense is light years ahead from when he arrived and even though he’s supposed to be focusing only on defense and rebounding, he’s become the top scoring option. Pons will almost always have a bigger, slower player guarding him, His high release and improved shot has gotten him some NBA level baskets. But it must be noted how reluctant he is to pump fake and take the ball to the rim. If he adds this element watch out.

Good post...agree our inability to hit free throws has really hurt us in our losses as well as erratic 3-point shooting as well as turnovers in 3/4 losses. Fulk is a definitely not the same player and I am not sure why...he seems to be nursing 1 or more injuries and he does seem "weaker". The lack of post presence is real issue (explains why we are 267th in 2-pt attempts and only 161st in 2-pt %) on adds to our issues already mentioned.

In addition, our inability to exploit the in-your-face perimeter defenses is a bit surprising given Keon and Jaden's athleticism - definitely did not see it coming. Would like to see us iso Keon, Jaden, and JJJ in the post (invert our offense). Clearly, we need Jaden to be healthy and efficient (the refs allowed Ole Miss to pretty much manhandle him whenever he drove and it showed on his lack of production) against the better teams.

Unfortunately, Barnes offense exacerbates the post issue. Recall the Villanova team that operated with four guards. But, you have to run an offense that relies on screens and cuts and we don't. Two things happen. When we do feed the post, we have four other players stand around and watch. But, our posts have a hard time getting deep, quality position, so the ball is often passed around the perimeter or guys dribble way too much.

I know it goes against Barnes's philosophy to create early offense and I think this approach works well at times, especially when you have an under-talented team. My frustration is why we don't take risks at times and run early offense, especially with the talent we have this year. Would be interested to see how this team played if the reins were loosened a bit for a few games.

If this team runs at every opportunity, opponents would not be able to set up in a zone and UT could possibly get easier baskets.

I agree it seems we could/should try more screen/cut and PR in addition to the inverted iso I mentioned. Re: post position, Fulky showed last year he was a threat to still get to the rim with some pretty polished post moves but those seem to have largely been missing this year. Statistically we get good looks but, clearly, our shooters are too inconsistent (even SV although I know he had that hip injury)...it is really too bad VBJ's play has dropped from earlier in the season because we really need another real 3-pt threat.
