Ole Miss Postgame Report

1. Tennessee actually shot 8-19 from 3 which is 42% and that is good in a vacuum. They made 5 in the first 10 minutes and 6 in the first 15 minutes. Only 2 the rest of the game however. When this team isn’t consistently hitting 3’s opponents shrink the floor and force Tennessee to take perimeter shots. And because Tennessee doesn’t run early offense it ends up being bad looks. That’s what happened tonight.

2. 10 offensive rebounds isn’t a lot but when you shoot only 51 shots like Ole Miss did and get 10 offensive rebounds then that isn’t a good recipe for success. The lack of a rebounder hurts and EJ Anosike seems to be out of the rotation now. In games like this with a slower pace you have to go get more rebounds.

3. The trap threw us off completely and I was really disappointed in the adjustments. The lack of pace was weird and Tennessee never seemed to want to push. JJJ had a couple really bad turnovers at the top of the zone. The passing was lazy and uninspired and the lack of adjustments didn’t help.

4. I thought Pons in the high post was a nice look when Ole Miss was in man and Pons had a nice groove. But they went away from it late. I wouldn’t have mind giving him a couple more opportunities there.

5. The scoring droughts with this team is pretty inexcusable. The movement has no purpose, some of the sets make no sense. During one of UT’s droughts they ran a post up late for ORN and I didn’t understand it at all. There needs to be more purpose with the motion and they need to get their best players the ball in better spots.

6. I like seeing Keon Johnson’s aggressiveness late. He’s still raw as hell offensively but it was nice to see him take charge. And I’ll give Jaden Springer a pass tonight. It was his first bad game of the year.

7. EJ Anosike and Victor Bailey continuing to regress has hurt the ceiling of this team. Their SEC numbers are awful and they aren’t bringing much right now to the team. They were supposed to be big contributors and it’s just not happening. I think getting Gaines some of Bailey’s minutes might not be a bad idea.

8. 10-16 from the free throw line...not okay. Once again another game it cost them late. Keon missing the front of a 1-n-1 late can’t happen.

9. Worst loss of the season by far. Especially when there was thinking they had turn the corner against Kansas. This team is still good but the lack of bench play and inconsistent offense reared it’s ugly head again. Need to get in the gym and work on finding more consistency. Still plenty of time to turn it around but 5-4 at this point in SEC play...I think it’s fair to say that’s a little disappointing. This is their first loss with Springer and a road loss so I’m not going to say the sky is falling but if this teams wants to win anything meaningful they’re going to have the fix their issues soon.

Good stuff, but I would never give Bailey’s minutes to Gaines. We need offense and Gaines gives us ZERO there.

JJJ has everything he needs to be a difference maker, except the tough mindset. Some folks fear being unsuccessful and that is how he seems to play. Turner led because he had good basic skills and he just worried about his next opportunity for success, not his last play, good or bad. If JJJ played with a mindset like that this team would be much better off imo. His skillset predicts more success than failure. His mind holds him back.

Don't understand why Pons flashes into the paint, wants the ball and then passes it back out, with TO half the time. He can elevate over anyone to get a shot off or draw a foul. Seems everyone but Johnson went into the I don't want to shoot it mod in second half.

I know it goes against Barnes's philosophy to create early offense and I think this approach works well at times, especially when you have an under-talented team. My frustration is why we don't take risks at times and run early offense, especially with the talent we have this year. Would be interested to see how this team played if the reins were loosened a bit for a few games.

Again, we had an 11-point lead with 14:00 left in a game that featured a total of 102 points. How do you lose that kind of a lead? That may as well have been a 20-pt lead in a game at that pace. Just an incredible collapse.

Springer hitting 56% FT attempts in SEC play. Keon better but not great. I think Springer’s ankle is still an issue.

I fear it's turning into the Season at Bernie's

Barnes needs to make the entire team shoot free throws during every break in practice. And then shoot some more. Want a pee break? Hit 10 consecutive free throws first. Thirsty? Make 50 free throws And then make them end their night by Having to hit 1000 before they can to home.

TN sucked this game. Defense was solid, but ole miss is hot garbage. Offense was atrocious. But hit their free throws and they still find a way to win that game.

I am afraid that what you are seeing these first 9 conference games is what you should expect the rest the season: inconsistency. It's not over, either. Expect not much better than a 10-8 overall conference record when the season is over with about a 5 or 6 seed in the SEC tournament.

This team will go 4-4 (maybe 5-3) the rest of the way, if they have not corrected their offensive woes by now, then they cannot be corrected without reworking the offense. This team had so much promise but will ultimately underperform this season....

I'd rather see Plavsic lumber around and trip over his feet than EJA get his shot swatted everytime he shoots and people rebound over him without having to jump.

As I've said elsewhere, teams that rely on freshmen usually end up being up and down. We will probably be up for Kentucky.

This is one of the bigger "misses" that Barnes has made as a recruiter at Tennessee. Anosike is a decent foul shooter and an average rebounder but he just cannot score around the basket or anywhere else. Not a major college talent.

Bailey is so inconsistent on offense and have some problems on defense I think our guards are passing up too many good shots early in the shot clock and end up having to taking a bad shot late in the shot clock. I know we need to work the ball to get open shots but, they need to take them when they get them. JMHO
