If it’s a hit by pitch, it’s a dead ball, so whoever was on third couldn’t steal home (but if the bases were loaded, he would have scored on the HBP).Ok, Dugout, help a newbie out. What was going on when Brown got hit by the pitch late in game?
Elander directed Brown back to the plate and umps huddled. Some rule I don't know. I get that he was hit before the run scored. It looked like there was more to it than that.
Could Brown have just stood there like nothing happened? Wouldn't the ump have called him hit by pitch anyway? Do we have a choice in the matter? Only if he doesn't leave the batter's box? Or hoping the ump would miss it? Please 'splain it.
Thanks. That makes sense. Is it at ump's discretion to call a wild pitch or passed ball even if a batter was hit by pitch? If it’s a hit by pitch, it’s a dead ball, so whoever was on third couldn’t steal home (but if the bases were loaded, he would have scored on the HBP).
If it was a wild pitch or passed ball, Brown would still be at bat (with either a ball or strike on him from that pitch), and the runner on third stole home. This is why CJE wanted it to be a wild pitch or passed ball because it would have been another run for UT.
Others feel free to chime in.
