I worked for Air Liquide. We had a nitrogen plant in Merritt Island. We supplied 8,800 psi gaseous nitrogen to a 14 mile pipeline used to inert the launch pad and various satellite equipment.
A co-workers wife work at the NASA Credit Union. The launch commander’s secretary brought a pass to her for me to get on the Cape.
My Sister and her family were able to get the kids out of school to come with me.
The sound wave was unreal. My shirt was moving from the rumble.

Another aside....you know that scene in the Right Stuff where the Mercury astronauts are hanging out in a bar and there's the side view of the pool behind the bar? Yeah, my parents hung out there and the old man was a fire inspector for the city.

My wife was born at Cocoa. Her mom was a nurse at the hospital there and her dad in the Air Force in the late 60’s/early70’s.
