OldTimer’s Dugout - Off Topic Thread

You weren't around in the Tom Landry days of head football coaching. He wouldn't allow some players that were drafted #1 to play & it was very frustrating to the fans. Dallas fans had to wait 4 years until Roger Stauback got done w/the Navy before joiing the team.
Pretty sure Landry never had to deal with free agency though. Was a lot easier to construct a team and have an extended period of dominance back then because you basically owned your players unless you decided to trade them or send them to waivers. He basically got to do what Nick Saban did all those years for Alabama before the transfer portal. Just got the best talent and stocked the cupboard for whenever his aging players weren’t valuable anymore. I have a lot more respect for coaches that have figured out how to win during free agency because your roster is always changing.

Yeah, Landry had players that played for him their entire carreers.

I will give Landry credit for being a master manipulator though. Fleeced multiple teams into giving up #1 or #2 overall picks and ended up drafting guys like Too Tall Jones and Tony Dorsett whenever they would have never had a chance based on where they were initially drafting. Teams in the 70s just kept falling for the hook, line, and sinker 🤣

I have a bad feeling the Braves are going to go on a run to end the season and finish close to .500 and miss out on getting the number 1 pick and still miss the playoffs by a mile. Snitker’s last 🖕 to the fans before he retires.

Too Tall Jones is from my home town Jackson, TN. He went to Merry High School.
After graduation he went to TN St. It was there he got his nickname "Too Tall" one day in practice from a guy that was assigned to block him while playing defense. The guy looked at his coach & said he was Too Tall to block. :)
