I became a big Joe Don Baker fan after that first movie came out. The City of Selmer, TN. didn't want Bing Crosby Productions to film the life of Sheriff Pusser bc they were afraid it would leave them a black eye on their city. So they picked Jackson & Henderson & the surrounding area for the film. I had some coworkers that played some extra deputies in the Part 2 & Part 3 movies. That's a great picture of Joe Don Baker above. He was an unknown actor before the movie came out. He rocketed to Hollywood fame after the first movie was released.

I worked with a gentleman, Bobby Joe Killingsworth that was a deputy for Pusser. His nickname was Bo Jack. Most did not know his proper name. He was the only deputy that lived to tell about it. He attributed it to the fact no one knew his name.

He also played the drums for Elvis in the early days. He wrote 2 or 3 country songs that May the top forty. I told him we would bronze him when he retired with a slot that we could put a quarter in so he could tell stories.

That took a lot of fearless guts working & being a deputy for Pusser in those days.
I was about 17 when those bad guys ambushed Pusser on the roadside back in 1967. It was all in the newspaper back then about the shooting. I read the clip on it and went on to the sports section.

Gleason had trouble remembering his lines & ad libed most of them. (Off script)
That's why the movie worked so well.

The Smith-Shawver kid is starting to come into his own. Still think we need to add a pitcher because we can’t trust Strider to stay healthy for an entire season going forward.
