OldTimer’s Dugout - Off Topic Thread

I think winning a CWS is harder than winning football or basketball NC. Just requires ball to bounce right, staying healthy, lots of skill along with a little luck. IIRC Arkansas has never one one and is a dropped pop fly away from winning one.

I think to win a Championship in any sport is extremely difficult. All have challenges. In college baseball, compared to football for instance, you lose your QB in Spring Practice, the dream might be over, no matter what you do. In baseball, you lose your Friday guy for the season, you got time and you still have two chances every weekend.

Good point and I agree it’s tremendously hard for big 3 sports, but I still think elite talent plus great coaching typically wins out in football. Less David’s beating Goliath‘s. One bad day at the plate and a dominating opposing pitcher ends your postseason. I wonder how many preseason #1s in football since 1999 have gone on to win a NC. I suspect there are a few.

I think the answer is 2.

USC
Alabama

I seem to remember not that long ago that the basevols were ranked very high in the preseason, eventually becoming #1, and CTV actually said something like, “I didn’t think we deserved it.”

I agree, players win games. Across the board, that’s true. Baseball is a long season so durability is important. Football is a long season in its own right, it’s a series of collisions, how long can the bodies keep that up? Basketball is a long season too, if ya lose your point guard before March…we know what that looks like.

Yep. They were ridiculously overrated in 23. Lots of carryover from success of 22 when they were underrated at 17. Obviously much better to be under the radar and be the Hunter vs pressure of the hunted.

6 preseason ranked #1 basketball teams have won NCAA title from 1984 the year field was expanded to 64 teams .
3 have from 1999
Connecticut in 2004
Florida in 2007
The other one was North Carolina in 2009
Thanks for the info.
So since 1999, preseason #1s who have won a NC:
Baseball 1 (Miami)
Football 2 (USC and Bama)
Basketball 3 (Conn, FL, and NC).
