OldTimer’s Dugout - Off Topic Thread

I will never understand how guys like Zach Wilson get drafted so high. Jags have the 27th ranked defense and your team only has 66 yards of offense and 3 points in the 1st half. At some point winning has to matter when evaluating these college QBs. Will Levis will be Zach Wilson 2.0.

On December 23 in Baseball History...
  • 1923 - Yankees submarine pitcher Carl Mays, who amassed 53 victories in 1920-21 (and whose pitch killed Cleveland's Ray Chapman in 1920), is sold to the Reds for $85,000. Mays never saw eye-to-eye with diminutive manager Miller Huggins in New York. He'll go 56-36 and close out his career in Cincinnati.

  • 1953 - Dodgers second baseman Junior Gilliam easily wins NL Rookie of the Year honors over Harvey Haddix and Ray Jablonski.

  • 1975 - Arbitrator Peter Seitz announces a landmark decision in favor of the Players Association, making pitchers Andy Messersmith and Dave McNally free agents. Seitz is immediately fired by John Gaherin, chairman of the owners' Player Relations Committee. McNally, who retired June 8, will not return to the major leagues, finishing with a 184-119 career record.

He looked great in the last minute of play against the Vols

My Cubs are having a great offseason for signing players.

I’m feeling hopeful the Bellinger and Swanson era Cubs will be a good team this season.

It's minus 1 degree in Jackson with a wind chill makes it a minus 16. The high is to be 11.
I hope you guys are warmer where you are w/nice warm heat & no busted pipes.
You still have power, right? Our electricity stayed on and no burst pipes!
You know it’s cold out, when you walk into a freezer/cooler and it warms you up!

Yes, thank God, our power is still on. I still let the dog out to pee & the wind blows in.
I hope I have good luck when starting the car later on sometime today.

Which city is best suited for an expansion team?

Las Vegas is automatic. NFL and NHL have taken full advantage of that location. My personal opinion, I think the A’s will be moving there and the Rays will be moving to Montreal. I would say the expansion cities will narrow down to Portland, San Antonio, Nashville and Charlotte. The only issue with Nashville and Charlotte is that they are in the same region and you know the Braves with not allow two teams to come into the Southeast like that. One of those two cities will get left out and the other expansion will go to either Portland or San Antonio. The issue with Portland is that it is close in proximity to Seattle so the Mariners will have push back. The issue with San Antonio is that there are already two Texas teams. My gut feeling is Nashville and Portland. Nashville is booming and Portland would create more excitement in the Northwest and hopefully create a natural rivalry with the Mariners.

I love the thought of expansion in baseball but I am not going to like the divisional realignment. There will be 4 four-team divisions so I have a feeling Manfred will screw that up and not place the teams in their proper divisions.

I really believe Nashville will be there based on some of the positive attention it has gotten from people with ears to the ground. Somebody asked me this summer if I would “root” for Nashville, and I told them no. Lifelong allegiances are hard to break.

Put a ballpark east of Nashville - maybe on I-840 between Mt. Juliet, Lebanon, and Murfreesboro.

Same here. I will not root for them but wish them well.
