OldTimer’s Dugout - Off Topic Thread

Did you know that Bob Gibson started 34 games in 1968 and only gave up 38ER? In 24 of those games, he gave up 1ER or less. I’ve looked at his stats from that season before but every time I go back, it gets more and more amazing. I know @mad4vols especially enjoyed how that season ended 😜
He also had 28 complete games, which makes the ERA of 1.12 even more unbelievable. Also had 13 shutouts and the guy was the definition of workhorse. Truly amazing year. I got his autograph outside Busch Stadium that year.

The Tigers broke my heart that year. Lolich outdueled Gibson, so you had to give props to him. Great WS performance by Lolich.

Lol ... I don't remember anything about baseball & the WS stuff in 1968.
I was a teenager in love & girls were all I was after .... + my college studies.

Congrats to @mad4vols finishing tied for 6th in the VolNation College Football Pick Em contest!
Thank you buddy.

Was there a better dual sport athlete in baseball/football who played for Tennessee?

That honor would go to Ron Widby. You should look that dude up. Best all-around athlete in Tennessee history. Condredge Holloway was great too. Willie Gault was also great. Nathan W. Dougherty was instrumental to Tennessee’s athletic success and tradition. John Barnhill. Bobby Dodd. Tom Pappas. Tennessee has a long history of multi-sport athletes.

Willie Gault .... loved that guy & hated to see him leave UT for the Chicago Bears.
