OldTimer’s Dugout - Off Topic Thread

Now seems like an appropriate time to confess that my wife won our family NCAA bracket pool last year because she picked UConn to win it all as a 4-seed. She said she did this because she vaguely remembered UConn being really good, but I’m sure she was actually thinking of the women’s team and lucked out. We’ll see about this year.

Has anyone owned/owns a BMW?
If so, what are your thoughts?
I have an almost 20 year old 330ci that’s my daily driver. Great car. Not too expensive to keep (more expensive than my previous Toyotas, however). Reliable. Great acceleration, great handling.

According to my mechanic, newer BMWs start to have major, expensive problems around 60,000 miles. My sister experienced this with her suv.

This is the exact right answer. Worked in that world for quite a while.

Those older 3 series drivelines can be really reliable. Granted, some things can be quirky/more expensive to fix if you don't have a good indy BMW mechanic but they'll run great for a long time if treated well.

Best part is they are a blast to drive too.

I've had a 330i for ~ 2 years and I really enjoy it. I used to have a mustang (wife made me get rid of it when we had kids) and a lexus (great car, but a little too family). I feel like the BMW is a nice mix of those, luxury but still with mojo. A criticism is that it's on the small side in terms of passenger space (we're not tall/big people, but if we were it would be tight) and trunk/storage space (very tight). My only regret is that I put a small mark on it after the first game of the Notre Dame super regional, which was right after I bought it, caused by the tiny parking garage over by TBA and perhaps my mood after the result of that game....

I drive a 12-year-old 535i with the 6: no real problems, and I love it. We did recently get the chance to "buy" a fairly new 7 series at an extremely low price (as a bonus/form of payment, in effect); but our mechanic said that year and model (sorry I don't remember exactly which) does develop some problems and that we'd be happier sticking with ours. Which is in keeping with the remarks by @@1RBFjr and @WallyBalls. The mechanic made it sound like it's model and year specific, but idk. I've always wanted one if those boxy 2002 models from the 70s.
