This was fascinatingOn July 14 in Baseball History...
- 1916 - Ernie Koob of the St. Louis Browns went the distance in a 17-inning 0-0 tie with the Boston Red Sox. Carl Mays went the first fifteen innings for the Red Sox and Dutch Leonardfinished.
- 1946 - Cleveland player-manager Lou Boudreau hit four doubles and a home run in the first game of a doubleheader against Boston, but Ted Williams connected for three home runs and drove in eight runs for an 11-10 Red Sox victory.
- 1956 - Mel Parnell of the Boston Red Sox pitched a no-hitter against the Chicago White Sox for a 4-0 victory at Fenway Park.
- 1967 - Eddie Mathews of the Astros hit his 500th home run off San Francisco's Juan Marichalat Candlestick Park. Houston beat the Giants 8-6.
- 1968 - Hank Aaron got his 500th home run off Mike McCormick as the Atlanta Braves beat the San Francisco Giants 4-2.
- 1968 - Don Wilson of the Houston Astros struck out eighteen Reds in a 6-1 victory over Cincinnati in the second game of a doubleheader.
- 1970 - Pete Rose of the Cincinnati Reds scored on Jim Hickman's 12th-inning single after bowling over Cleveland's Ray Fosse at home plate to give the National League a 5-4 victory over the American League at Riverfront Stadium.
- 1972 - In a Major League first, Bill Haller was the umpire behind the plate while his brother Tom Haller was the catcher for the Detroit Tigers.
- 1995 - Ramon Martinez threw the first no-hitter of the season as the Los Angeles Dodgers beat the Florida Marlins 7-0. Martinez was perfect for 7 1/3 innings before walking Tommy Gregg.
Thanks! I love the history of baseball. I’m glad they kept up with the scorekeeping of every game that was played for future generations to look back at. It lets you know they truly cared about the sport. This is a sport that had 70k+ people in attendance for World Series games in the 40s and 50s. The Dodgers had 90k+ showing up whenever they were playing their games at the Coliseum. Could you imagine football stadiums filled up to watch baseball games? I know there are some on here that are old enough to remember. The World Series of 1959. It must have been exciting times. I know in 2008 the Dodgers and Red Sox played a game there and had well over 100k but that is the only time I remember a ton of fans comparable to football games. This was fascinating![]()
Eddie Matthews is like the forgotten all time great. It’s a shame that the Braves have 3 guys like Matthews, Murphy and Chipper, and I don’t think any of them get the credit they deserve! Some interesting tidbits after I saw Eddie Mathews and Hank Aaron hit their 500th home runs on the same day, one year apart, against the same team.
• Eddie Mathews’ first 14 seasons: 477 Home Runs in 7597 at bats (15.9 AB/HR)
• Hank Aaron’s first 14 seasons: 481 Home Runs in 8283 at bats (17.2 AB/HR)
• Mathews and Aaron have the most home runs as teammates all time at 863. Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig are 2nd at 859.
• Mathews is the only player in Braves history to have played in all three cities of the franchise: Boston, Milwaukee, and Atlanta.
• Mathews was the manager whenever Hank Aaron (40), Darrel Evans (41) and Davey Johnson (43) all hit at least 40 homers for the 1973 Atlanta Braves. They were the first team to have three players hit 40 home runs in a season.
• Mathews was also the Braves manager whenever Aaron hit his 715th home run to break Ruth’s record.
They will forever be intertwined in baseball history.
Could not agree more. Even Hank was under appreciated. He only won a single MVP, which is crazy to even think about. I was looking at the voting for a couple of those years and they gave an MVP to Don Newcombe who had a 3.06 ERA. And the 2nd place guy was 13-5 with a 2.87 ERA. Another year they voted Dick Groat ahead of him. Groat had 6 HR and 73 RBI, meanwhile Hank only lead the NL in runs, homers, RBI, SLG, and OPSEddie Matthews is like the forgotten all time great. Indictment of the media during that era, and clearly the culture.Could not agree more. Even Hank was under appreciated. He only won a single MVP, which is crazy to even think about. Might have to get me one of those. It helps that the Braves colors are red, white, and blue so it actually goes well together. You Braves nuts will be happy to see what I just picked up for my boys.

Good luck! They are sold out everywhere! I can’t find them online, LIDS at the mall didn’t even get them this year. I found them at Pro Image in West town mall. They only had a few left.Might have to get me one of those. It helps that the Braves colors are red, white, and blue so it actually goes well together.
My oldest boy really likes them. I like the old ones that had the Stars and Stripes inside the logo.Might have to get me one of those. It helps that the Braves colors are red, white, and blue so it actually goes well together.
Yeah I was thinking that too but Ernie Banks had just won back-to-back MVPs in 1958 and 1959. Hank won in 1957. Willie Mays won in 1954. Roy Campanella won in 1951, 1953, and 1955. And Jackie Robinson won in 1949. 1956 and 1960 were just really bizarre voting. Hank should’ve won in 1956 and 1960 could’ve been your pick of the litter between Hank, Willie Mays, Eddie Mathews, Ernie Banks, Frank Robinson, Ken Boyer. Maybe they had Ernie Banks fatigue? Idk but those two years really stick out compared to the rest of the voting that decade.Indictment of the media during that era, and clearly the culture.
