OldTimer’s Dugout - Off Topic Thread

This morning reminds me of a time long ago. It was a Kentucky vs. Tennessee game day and I had to work that day at a hospital that no longer exists here. It was a cold, wintry January morning and my mood was a little less than happy because I knew I was missing the biggest home game of the year with our most hated rival. As I drove onto Henley early that morning, I was caught at a red light, just sitting there very early in the morning with not a soul walking around on the streets. As my light turned green, I caught a glimpse of a person on the side walk walking just to my right. It was Eddie Sutton. I guess Coach Sutton was taking an early morning walk to gather his thoughts for the battle ahead.

Should’ve kidnapped him and ensured a Vols victory.

It’s funny that you bring that up. My boy and I watched a Babe Ruth documentary recently and he was blown away by the amount of time Ruth spent just hanging around town, talking to people, taking pictures with kids, etc...
He asked if I thought Lebron James, Bryce Harper or Pat Mahomes does stuff like that in their team cities.
I had to break his naive little heart.

Ahhhh, man. Good times with your son. Here is a pic of my son and two Vol shirts/jersey from 2008 after the last SEC game. Coach Pearl had given some dads and their sons access to the area just outside the dressing room. The shirt on the left is the one Lofton signed. Such a good guy.

Josh Allen and Joey Votto are the first ones that come to mind. LeBron is too worried about his business ventures and speaking out on things that he has no clue about, Bryce is just a self absorbed prick. Mahomes seems like a nice guy but whenever you are the face of the NFL I’m sure he gets pulled a million different directions 24/7. But Allen and Votto are/were stars of their game and they still find ways to interact with fans. They are a couple of my favorite athletes whenever it comes to being genuine people off the field.

On January 14 in Baseball History...
  • 1919 - John McGraw, Charles A. Stoneham, and Tammany politician Judge Francis X. McQuade buy controlling interest in the Giants from the John Brush estate. Having drawn just 265,000 fans in 1918, the club is sold at a bargain price. The trio will spend many days in courtrooms fighting among themselves, as well as fending off government charges about Stoneham's business practices.

  • 1940 - Commissioner Kenesaw Mountain Landis gives free agency to 91 Detroit players and farm hands. Citing cover-ups of the movement of players within its organization, Landis hands freedom to Roy Cullenbine, Benny McCoy, Lloyd Dietz, and Steve Rachunok from the parent roster and orders $47,250 paid as compensation to 14 players. Johnny Sain is one of 23 players who will later make it to the major leagues.

  • 1954 - Baseball and Hollywood are officially linked as former Yankees great Joe DiMaggiomarries actress Marilyn Monroe.

  • 1970 - Johnny Murphy, the Mets general manager who had seen his team rise from the N.L. cellar to the world championship, dies of a heart attack at age 61. Murphy was a star relief pitcher for the Yankees in the 1930s and early 1940s.

  • 1976 - Ted Turner completes his purchase of 100 percent of the Atlanta Braves.

  • 1987 - Catfish Hunter and Billy Williams are elected to the Hall of Fame by the BBWAA. Hunter made his name as the ace of the Oakland A's staff in their championship years and made his fortune as one of the first free agents. Williams set a N.L. record by playing in 1,117 consecutive games and accumulating 426 home runs and a batting title.

I actually did show him a video of Joey Votto interacting with fans.
Not a Reds fan at all but I’m a fan of Votto for sure.

Love me some Joey Votto. Would be nice if that were the majority of professional athletes but that is what makes guys like him so unique. That is why I love our baseball team. Tony makes sure these guys give back to the fans, especially the young fans. I could care less about getting a signed piece of apparel at this stage in my life but whenever I was a kid I used to idolize athletes. It warms my heart to see them out there signing stuff for kids an hour after a midweek Bellermine game. I’m sure they have tests or quizzes to prepare for the next day and yet they are taking time to interact with the fans.

Not a superstar, but former Giant Hunter Pence is cool like that. He would hang out in the neighborhood and ride his scooter to the ballpark.
Yeah I remember seeing that. Lamar Jackson goes back to Florida and plays street football in his old neighborhood like he’s not a NFL QB. A lot of these guys forget where they came from but it’s cool to see stuff like that.

In that situation, I'd treat it as a 4-way stop. It's not like a cop would be sitting around watching that early in the morning. But that's just me w/no patience to stay put.
