Everyone was so quick to anoint Cody Bellinger the face of baseball after he had won a ROY and MVP in his first three seasons by the age of 23 years old. He hasn’t had an OPS over .900 since and only 2 years over .800. This league can humble you real quick.

As an aside, I don’t even think Bellinger deserved that MVP. Yelich led the NL in BA, OBP, SLG (led majors), and OPS (led majors) and only trailed Bellinger by 3 HR and yet had twice as many stolen bases (30 vs 15) having played 26 fewer games.

Agreed, but Yellich is another fine example of the point being discussed that immediately came to mind!

Yelich unfortunately hasn’t been the same since the patellar fracture and then the back surgery on top of that. He was putting up just as good, if not better stats than Trout during his peak for those two seasons.
