Yeah but he will also be getting paid $68M/yr the following decade. He’s still getting that money, it’s just deferred. He isn’t taking a paycut.

Hitting is hitting man. Power numbers will always fluctuate by era but if you put Chipper in any era that dude would still be one of the best all around hitters of all-time, regardless of position.

How so? All of Ohtani’s money is guaranteed and the Dodgers will be on the hook for $68M/yr for an entire decade that will count against the luxury tax for a player that won’t even be on the roster by the time it rolls around. In 2006, Chipper had a $17M contract and took an actual pay cut to $11M. $4M was turned into a signing bonus and then they signed him for $15M/yr for another couple of years. No deferred money. That is the definition of a pay cut.

Ohtani wanted to construct his contract this way for 2 reasons.
1. To help team sign other top tier FA or trade for them.
2. Tax reasons, when he retired he will move back to Japan,taxes hell of a lot less.
3. He will make just as much off of Jersey sells and merchandise..

Dodgers aren't worried about future Luxury tax that ownership has deepest pockets in MLB..
