  • 1874 - At the fourth meeting of the Professional Association in Boston, the batter's box is officially adopted. It is also decided that expulsion will be the penalty for any player betting on his own team and any player betting on any other team will forfeit his pay.

  • 1901 - Jimmy Collins, Connie Mack's choice as the best all-time third baseman, switches leagues but not cities. Collins leaves Boston's N.L. club to manage the A.L.'s new Boston Somersets. The N.L. Beaneaters will also lose outfielder Hugh Duffy, who becomes manager of Milwaukee's new A.L. entry, and catcher Billy Sullivan, who signs with the Chicago White Stockings.

  • 1918 - The Yankees purchase first baseman George Burns from the Detroit Tigers and immediately trade him to the Philadelphia Athletics for outfielder Ping Bodie.

Regarding basketball, all I can say about last night is that Alabama is just embracing and pushing that convict image. I swear they’re just playing up to their current image and then managing to supersede it each game.

Also, Nate Oats is the gift that keeps giving as far as the national media goes. Every time he has a new interview, he says something even more tone deaf than the interview before.

Lastly, I’ve read through hundreds of Alabama fans’ comments concerning their team’s behavioral woes and I honestly haven’t read a single fan comment that comes close to condemning their team in any way. It really is mind-boggling.

Rick Barnes is a straight-up good guy.

I seriously hope that voters do not vote for a single Alabama player or coach for any conference or national awards, including All-SEC and All-American. A statement needs to be made that bad character should not be rewarded. I was always taught that it is a privilege to play sports. There is clearly no discipline within the Alabama basketball program.

If you are so proud of them, then why aren’t you letting them talk to the media???

"I couldn't be more proud of this group, to be honest with you," Oats said. "Obviously, it's a heartbreaking situation that's never lost on us. But the kids have worked really hard. Winning the SEC is not an easy thing to do."

After the game, the school did not make players available to reporters for the sixth straight media session.

Merkle is best known for (this is been the name of it for a very long time) Merkle’s Boner, a base running error that had big implications resulting in the Cubs winning the pennant by one game over the New York Giants in 1908: Merkle Bonehead Play - BR Bullpen

That’s crazy. Baseball was the Wild West back then. One of those comments in that Reddit thread is hilarious:

Bob Emslie, the base umpire for Merkels Boner, was the most experienced MLB umpire in history (at that point, with over 2500 games). The Giants head coach, John McGraw after the game called him Blind Bob.

Shortly after, Emslie showed up to Giants practice with a rifle, put a dime on the pitchers mound and managed to shoot it from behind home plate. He was never called Blind Bob again.

Yeah, for sure. I hope this situation ruins recruiting for them in the future. Quinerly is another guy that has lots of behavioral issues.
