OldTimer’s Dugout - General Topics, Chat, Random Photos and Memes.......No Politics

Soccer ... watching Belgium vs Canada at 1:00 pm. CT. No score by 1:15 .... go somewhere else to see a TV show. Come back 45 minutes later & still "NO" score in the same dumb game. Gee, it's so freaking exciting, I'm peeing in my pants waiting for the next game to come on Fox.
So, now in other regular news that's going on in the world today .... another mass shooting.
You make soccer sound boring.

Duh. That's because .... surprise ..... :) ding ding ding .... it is boring.
Run up the field kicking ball .... run back down the field kicking the ball ... etc; etc; etc.
Boring 👇

Not boring when you're doing 195 mph on someone's bumper for 3 hours.
Besides, if I do watch, I only watch for the big wrecks that happen. Since the driver of car #24 retired, I don't see these races hardly at all now. Talladega race track is my favorite.
I would not of taken you as a Gordon fan. Figured you were probably more of a Dale Earnhardt fan.

It’s pretty interesting if you listen to the strategy on a radio scanner. It’s much more than a bunch of left turns.

Also, IMO, a short track race is easier to watch than a super speedway. At a place like Martinsville or Bristol, the whole track is right there. In Atlanta or Daytona, the back stretch is way away and it’s hard to figure out the cars, but you get the high speeds.

Futbol seems like a sport that is perfectly designed to maximize drama resulting from calls by the refs, near misses, flops, constant action, and close margins. Therefore, it's a great opportunity for fans to freak out, argue, and complain, which people all over the world can get into.
We took a family trip to Europe a few years ago. We went to see the French National Team play their last match (a friendly) before flying off to the World Cup (I think it was in Brazil).

It was absolutely flat out crazy. Flags were allowed in the stadium and it seemed like everyone was waving them while singing their national anthem (which is surprisingly gory:What are the lyrics to the French National Anthem, La Marseillaise – and what do they mean? ). They love Les Bleus. The atmosphere was like Tennessee playing Alabama at night.

It was disconcerting when the fans were locked in their sections. As in, Section C had a fence between it and Section D. I guess it cut down on hooliganism. The clang of the gate behind us was bewildering.

It was a great atmosphere and fun to watch in person.

That’s awesome, I’d love to experience something like that

On November 24 in Baseball History...
  • 1953 - The Dodgers sign the relatively unknown Walter Alston to a one-year pact as their manager for 1954.

  • 1964 - Third baseman Ken Boyer of the Cardinals is voted National League Most Valuable Player, with 243 votes to 187 for Philadelphia outfielder Johnny Callison.

  • 1971 - Catcher-infielder Earl Williams, with 33 home runs and 87 RBI for the Braves, wins the National League Rookie of the Year honors. Williams gets 18 of 24 votes, with the others going to Willie Montanez of the Phillies.

  • 1976 - Joe Morgan outpoints Reds teammate George Foster to win his second straight National League Most Valuable Player Award. Morgan led with a .576 slugging average, and hit.320, scored 113 runs, knocked in 111, and stole 60 bases.

  • 1982 - Cal Ripken, Jr., who hit .264 with 28 home runs as a shortstop and third baseman for the Orioles, is named American League Rookie of the Year.

  • 1986 - Cardinals reliever Todd Worrell, who led the National League with 36 saves, is named National League Rookie of the Year. Worrell had helped St. Louis to the 1985 World Series as a late-season call-up but was still a rookie the next season as defined by the BBWAA.

  • 1997 - Tim Johnson is hired as manager of the Blue Jays. He succeeds Cito Gaston, who was fired in September after having led the Blue Jays to World Series titles in 1992 and 1993. Johnson, a former bench coach with the Expos and Red Sox, managed the Iowa Cubs of the Triple-A American Association in 1997 and beat out three others for the job: Buck Martinez, Larry Bowa, and American League Manager-of-the-Year Davey Johnson, who interviewed in Toronto after leaving the Orioles.
