Wow, I have to step away for a few day and I come back and the thread has morphed into a braves circle jerk. That's just too sad.I'm old enough to remember when the braves had to give tickets away yo games at Fulton County Stadium and the people who showed up wore bags over their faces so the could not be identified. Braves baseball fans are as bad as Bama football fans. Just a bunch of front runners who forget the times when bot program stank like skunk poop.

Hope things are getting better with your son. There are a couple of Braves fans here but I would say they have been diehard fans for awhile. It’s been enjoyable and fun hanging out with the gang in the off-season no matter what events are going on. It’s pretty much a place to discuss anything you want like the USFL Championship game the other night. That reminds me, started at midnight, we got Tennessee day on the SEC Network.

The Bill Bates that got trucked in September of 1980 by Herschel Walker. That play is still shown on TV in some college football highlights. That was Walker's first ever college TD of his career.
The Bill Bates that signed a free agent contract w/the Dallas Cowboys his favorite team growing up. You may read more on this great person/football player from the Knoxville area.

I was a kid and sitting in Section N, Row 6 and that play in the south end zone happened right in front of me. I remember thinking, as Walker broke free, something along the lines of, “oh, Bates is going to kill ‘em.” Then, there was this crushing blow as Walker plunged right through Bates and left him flat on his back. I’m pretty sure Bates was a senior at that time. That was easily one of the most impressionable plays I ever witnessed.

Bates is the epitome of hard work and determination, paying off. I just hate that he is often referenced with that play.

Bates was only a sophomore that day. His college days at UT began in 1979 & went to 1982.
He & Herschel Walker both played on the same Dallas Cowboys team together for several years.

Bates had a wild & reckless style of play that became a fan favorite at UT. And once playing for the Cowboys, starting off as a special teams player, by running down the field at top speed during kick-offs & making wild vicious sensational tackles Bates became a fan favorite all over America. The Bates name became a household name when football season would come around.

Thanks…..the details fade for me. I bet Walker and Bates had a few laughs together regarding that play. I said I was a kid that day…..it was 1980 and I was 22. Man, oh man.
