Anybody know a mechanic that is willing and ABLE and has the patience to work on a carburetorated dodge 318? Preferably closer to downtown Knoxville? Thanks. Prof

I wish you luck. Getting harder to find someone like that. I know a few, but they're nowhere near you unfortunately.

I had a 318 in the mid sixties that I put a handfull of the choke releases on. The things were just a coil flat spring that went on the intake. When the engine got warm it was supposed to pull off the choke. Never worked right, I, like most, finally put a choke cable on it. Surely Chrysler corrected that on latter 318s.

It’s running and idling very rough. We have messed with the timing and the last guy I had it with says he found a vacuum leak but I’m still having issues. I need a fresh set of eyes on this engine. I’m ordering a Chiltons but really rather than me learning to be a mechanic I’d rather have a good mechanic smooth this thing out. ‘79 Plymouth trailduster.

Was it running rough before you messed with the timing?

Take off the valve covers, look for a push rod that has punched a hole in the rocker.
OR do a compression check on all 8

G8torh8ter - I will check with Lerch’s. Thank you. Joevol- it ran a bit better after the messing with the timing. Tnutater - I still think there’s a vacuum leak somewhere or maybe something in the fuel system that isn’t right.

Is it an automatic?

Since you said it was a carb engine, has any work been done to the carb? Recently or ever?
A clean carb and fuel system works wonders.

I've worked on a quadrazillion and three D50, D100, and Ram Chargers of that era in my previous life.

Does the dome light work?

Edit: Seriously.

Were you able find a good repair shop? I liked them old CPD's. They were pretty tough. They had some short comings, but pretty tough.

Let’s see: no speedometer, no wipers, no radio, no heat/ac, no clock, no cb, and no dome light.
however, I’ve rode an angry uncooperative horse before and I can ride this one too.

Ask the folks at your local parts store. They know the folks that shop there that they would trust and what they work on. They should be able to recommend a few.
