Which Bristol configuration do you prefer?

1. Old 36° banking
2. New progressive banking

I hate to throw a monkey wrench in the works, but it was reported when they began to tear up the old concrete, they discovered the banking had lessened over the years as they repaved to where it was only about 32 degrees. Just for clarification are we comparing the new track to the most recent concrete surface or to the original 36 degree asphalt surface? Which was not the original 24 degree surface from 1961. maybe we need three choices: 36 degree asphalt, 36 degree concrete, or current. Or you could add a fourth, the original 1961 track.

The excitement level is gone now. I have been going for many years as far back as asphalt track and 2 concrete bleachers. Yes there is more side-by-side racing now, but you don't see the emotion, excitement, fireworks, etc anymore. I find it dull. It used to be harder to get a Bristol night race ticket than a Daytona 500 ticket. I have turned down free tickets for the last 5-6 races. If i turn down free tix, no way would I pay for tickets now. They had the longest sell-out streak of ANY track, and they blew it. Bristol execs say attendance has fallen off mainly because of the economy. I think that's wishful thinking. 90% of the people I talk to say its boring now. If it was still the show it used to be, people would still come economy be damned. They don't. To me, its no better than New Hampshire now. 'Fixing' Bristol when it wasn't broke ranks up there with the worst blunders in sports history. The only blunder greater, perhaps, is the Red Sox selling The Babe to the Yankees. I absolutely HATE the new configuration. End rant.

PS: Hope Bristol execs sense the reality and fix the 'solution'.

Any 36° banking.

The emotion and excitement is down series wide, not just Bristol. Though this year has had some good racing.

Attendance is down at ALL tracks, not just Bristol. I personally enjoy it. For one, it keeps ticket prices low, and two, there's more room to spread out.

Agreed, but Bristol sucked AGAIN. Like it or not, people loved the beatin and bangin of the old Bristol.

When we went to Loudon yearly for the summer race we'd always chip in to buy a 5th seat for the 4 of us.

A lifesaver on a hot stagnant day.

Scalpers, brah. You don't even have to pay face anymore.

Yep. Problem is, I turn down free tickets now. I wouldn't pay 5 bucks to see that product now, and I live 30 miles from the track.

The locals I have talked to would go to Bristol under the old style regardless of excitement overall. Has there been any Darlington style emotion since progressive banking? I don't remember any.

You don't remember Kyle and Carl at the night race a few years back?

Selective memory is fun when it comes to Bristol. Lots of people forget Kenseth won two night races in a row and led like 950 laps, both on the old setup.

I didn't think it was that bad. Kyle aint no dummy. He wouldn't confront Edwards in person. That dust up wasn't that special to me. I don't fault you for your opinion of that incident. We just don't see it the same, that's all.

It wasn't selective memory. I said I couldn't remember. That's why I asked the question.

You're obviously not going to be satisfied with any answer I give you.

Dude, your taking my statements as arguing with you. It's not like that. I am just expressing my views same as you. We probably wont see eye to eye on this, but that's fine. I'm not going to get upset over it. It's all good to me.

I vote for the old Bristol because I hate the progressive banking on this configuration. It's just as hard to pass because if someone has just a solid car they can run the top line and no one can pass them on the bottom.

We are seeing different races or something. I have seen plenty of passes on the bottom. It really depends on how the car is set up, and/or how the track either comes to you or goes away. And gearing is a factor at Bristol due to the RPM range between running high or low.

To me it boils down to do you like to see true racing where cars can run side by side, or do you like to see wrecks. I'm not saying you should like or not like either one, it's whatever gets your pulse rate going. Me, I am old school, and I know what tearing up equipment means. I like to see skill win out by door to door action. Any driver at this level can bump and run, although many cannot without wrecking. Give me Dale, Sr and DW going side by side for lap after lap back when it was asphalt in the early night races.

I hate crashes more than anyone, but I think it's just as hard to pass on the current Bristol than it was on the older one. A decent car running the high groove will get enough momentum off the corner to hold position on the car below them.
