This is for the more technical football guys as my impression was our OL splits were more narrow than most teams and more narrow than past season for us.

Was our OL splits more narrow than before?

and if so what was the strategy behind that?

Generally speaking, most offenses that are heavy on zone blocking schemes use 6 inch splits. This way, they're all moving in unison particularly on outside zone running plays. I didn't notice a difference between this year and last, but I could be wrong.

Look up TCU's line splits, it's crazy how wide they are.

I didn't notice the difference but there are a few possible reasons. They could feel it gives them more room to run off or outside the tackles. Could be to suck in part of the back 7 to give the WR's more room to work. Could be to offset USCe's smaller, quicker interior DL's.

not my area of expertise but I thought maybe it was an approach of bunching defenders into a smaller area and a belief we could overpower them physically.

Generally you don't want wide splits when the DL is a lot quicker than your OL. Unfortunately UT's OL didn't bully them in the first half either. They should have been able to get their hands on those DL's and re-establish the LOS in the laps of their LB's. It was better in the 2nd half but still not what you'd want to see from this OL.

Agreed overall I was disappointed in the OL. That first drive of the 2nd half should have happened more often

The left side was solid, the right side was hot and cold. We chose to run right in some key situation and it didn't work out well.

Hoping Cade starts next week.

Thanks,

The first sack was on chandler. He completely blew the protection on that right side.

I agree, what really sucks is that he shoots inside to help with someone, JG avoids the guy Chandler misses then the guy Chandler went to help block instantly gets by him and sacks JG.

Here's Mike Leach's line splits. They are obviously designed to spread the defense from sideline to sideline with 4 wr's.

Why he shot inside there made no sense to me
