OL Coach Will Friend

Certainly has the experience and is a good SEC assistant. My only negative about Friend and Richt is that we rarely had enough O-line talent. We always seemed to have to come up with a makeshift line and put guys in positions where they might not fit as well. And when we got quality linemen like John Theus, they were not coached up to perform at their highest potential. I think this is one large piece that we were missing that led to UGA not having the success under Richt that we could have had. SEC football is won/lost in the trenches.

I remember reading comments on the AJC that jibes with your account. First thing I thought when his hire was announced. We had similar gripes concerning Jim Chaney as a playcaller. The fact that UGA’s OC valued him enough to bring him along for his first HC gig prolly means the truth’s somewhere towards the middle. Good coaches always learn and improve at every stop fwiw.

My understanding, and this is from my brother who went to UGA, is that Friend and Richt valued speed over size on the OL. Cheney loves size.

That is pretty much it. Bobo loves stretch plays and OLs that move laterally and take DLs in the direction they are moving and allow the RBs to find cut back lanes. It's an effective strategy but can be frustrating to watch when the D guesses right.

UGA fans did get frustrated a lot by our lack of numbers on the OL and tendency to have 4 or 5 guys that were reaches and never developed but I don't think Pruitt will have the same philosophy. Friend is a good OL coach and should do well at UT.

Georgia O-line was not that bad. Well you have had some good running backs. And we know what it is like to have a coach who don't coach the players up. I think we got one now that will coach them up. Good luck in your Bowl game and go kick Oklahoma's azz.

He is not a miracle worker. He has one really good Olineman in Smith.. He is gonna have his work cut out for him.. Jimmys and Joes not Xs and Os.. He can scream till he passes out trying to make some of these lineman become physical maulers but if a player isn't naturally mean and nasty and loves physical violence, its hard to install. I'm just hoping our line blocks north and south instead of sideways.

I think we'll see a huge difference in year one with this OL.

LOL, you sure banked on your audience being over 40 to know those names. Maybe over 50.

Over 50, I'm almost 54 and I barely remember Kojak (Maybe because I was more of a Starsky & Hutch /Baretta /BaBa Black Sheep guy). I got in plenty of Sgt Carter/Gomer Pyle USMC reruns though.

Just get rid of that stupid zone blocking scheme Butch used and you're good to go
