Listen to a (might I say slimmer) Jerome Carvin talking about helping to recruit RB Gray, and the status of recruiting Memphis players:

Only 4? I realize it’s clear on the other side of the state, but how did they not prioritize Memphis in the Jones administration?

I love that Pruitt is trying to turn Memphis back into a Tennessee stronghold.

Because Jones was a terrible coach that, outside of a few players, relied on recruiting legacy players who were super athletic anyway, and then refused to coach them up to their full potential. I also believe that he thinks he truly is a great coach, which is just laughable.

Biggest reason is that UT is about the 7th closest SEC school to Memphis

Mister Pruitt... Build that Wall
Build a Wall around ATL!

I love the state of TN and I love when UT gets big time in-state guys.

But if I had to choose the Top 10 in TN vs
10- 20 ranked (not even top 10) in GA.
I'm going with ranked 10-20 in GA.

Atlanta area is much closer to Knoxville and there is even more talent there than Memphis...

If you were bad at running a team in the SEC and you were in denial, you could focus on your winning at Central Michigan & Cincinnati
You could also look at your Tn ranking in recruiting classes and your three bowl wins
If Butch looks at that and misses him shortcomings, then he won't be able to grow as a coach

Agreed. And Pruitt needs to get a UT share from the Birmingham area. Plenty of talent in that area.

I used to live in Memphis for 25 years (moved away in 1999). No one, and I mean no one, has 'locked down' Memphis for UT - not Majors, Fulmer, etc. There are too many SEC schools closer to Memphis than UT - Ole Miss, Arky, Vandy, Miss St, Bama, etc. While UT has got its share of notable Memphis players, other SEC schools have as well to include Bama, LSU and Ole Miss.

While I would focus on Memphis, I would spend 1.5X my time in Atlanta. There are 1M people in Memphis. There are 6M people in Atlanta. The numbers greatly favor looking more SW than W when recruiting.

True, many fans don't realize the fact that Memphis is closer to Arkansas, Old Miss, Miss State, Memphis, Alabama, Missouri, Kentucky and Illinois than it is from Knoxville Tn

Glad to see a Memphis focus. Now let’s do the same in the mid-state.
Memphis, west Tenn., east Tenn; Looking from outside these area and able to see lots of mid state football, this is the area to completely "lock down"... There are some from west, and east we just can't get. But if hard work is done, I think most of mid state kids will be UT favorable. ( Maybe not the transit influx bunch around metro Nashville.)

You know..... Butch did fairy well outside the SEC while here. But he just didn't have the system to make it in the SEC.
Face it, not just because we are "here", but the SEC is the top really rough and tumble conference. Not only must you have really good players, they must be tough.. Butch just didn't understand this.

Not to argue, but have you driven from Memphis to Ark or Ky.?? Not closer than Knoxville. Bye the way, why would anybody go to Ill. or Mo.????

Memphis has never been a stronghold for UT. Sure we get some strong players from there but it has historically been primarily Ole Miss and Alabama with a few to Arkansas and Memphis. I was born, raised and educated there but could never understand the lack of support for UT from that sector.

I say dip into the Florida talent pool next. Not just IMG, but there are several outlying areas with great talent, including not only the panhandle but the central part of the state too. Plus that takes away from what the Gators can bring in, which makes our class stronger in the East and brings us closer to the division race.

This all day, every day. Years ago, Fla, Tx and Cali were considered tops for HS talent. This past decade however, Ga is right there with them. An argument could easily be made, Ga has even surpassed them in producing D1 talent. In short, Ga has become a goldmine, and teams all across the country pull big time talent from there year after year, and lots of it.

There is one metric that says it has overtaken California in top NFL players. And is only behind FL and TX.

GA is saturated with talent and not its surprising. It's always had the talent and now some of the top high schook coaches are in that state.

Lastly, TN is still a major priority. Because the talent is rising here! Top 10 state in football talent. It's just that GA maybe number 1 here soon....
