Oklahoma Tailgate

Be forewarned that Oklahoma only sells 3.2 beer cold. You can buy something like Heineken that is normal alcohol content, but only at room temperature. So allow time to cool it or buy twice as much American beer as you normally would.

There are a couple of construction zones on 35E between Dallas and Denton. Be prepared to slow down in traffic. Can't speak for north of Denton.

OKC does.

But it's almost as easy to fly into Dallas, rent a car and drive.

Not trying to be smart, but how's it just as easy? Norman is like 25 miles from OKC compared to 150+ from Dallas. Wife and I got crazy cheap flights on SW from Nashville to OKC, by crazy cheap I mean free thanks to SW points.

My boss who's an OU season ticket holder is arriving in town tomorrow for a few days before he heads to Norman, I'm going to get the lowdown on what to do and where to go from him. Unfortunately, my wife couldn't get off Friday so we don't get into OKC until 10pm and leave out 6am on Sunday so not much time out there.

There's not many airlines that fly into OKC directly, especially without a layover. Southwest is getting a few new routes put on the schedule, but I'd say many of them still feed through Dallas-Fort Worth and Love Field.

So depending on how much time you want to spend or waste, it's sometimes easier to fly into Dallas and rent a car instead of waiting through a four-six hour layover. Especially if your ultimate goal is to rent a car anyway.

Gotcha. We go through Houston on the way out there and STL coming back. Both legs are only 4 hours. Previously SW only went into Love and they didn't even have direct flights to Love, I've heard that's changing though. Everytime I've gone to Love it's been through Houston or KC. I have meetings 1-2x a year at the Hyatt at DFW but I refuse to fly anything other than SW so I fly to Love and make my coworker in TX pick me up and take me to DFW. He cusses me everytime haha.

Sooner in Oklahoma here. Glad to have you guys coming to Norman and can't wait to make the trip next year. Curious as to when some of you are coming to town and where you are staying. I sure would't mind pointing you in the right direction for Friday night and Saturday tailgate or pre game.

Myself and another recent UT alum are driving from Knoxville EARLY Friday morning. We expect to be in Norman around 6:00 or 7:00 that night. We're looking for a tailgate to join Saturday pre-game for sure, maybe Friday night too.

My group is staying at the Holiday Inn in Norman. Not sure about its quality, appears to be average from the online reviews., but it's only 4 miles from the stadium.

The Wright Amendment ends on Oct 13, so Oct 14 begins nonstop flights into and out of Love...gonna be great.

If you're looking for bars/restaurants in Norman, try around Campus Corner:
O'Connells
Logan's
7/47
Louie's
The Mont is just a few blocks east of Campus Corner
bunch of other bars and restaurants in the area, just walk around and you'll find plenty.

Tailgating is mostly south of the stadium along Lindsey and east side of stadium along Jenkins north of Heisman Park - you'll meet tons of friendly Sooner fans.

The Switzer Center is a must-see for OU football history, trophies, memorabilia, and great for any true fan of CFB. It's open on Fridays before games from 9-6, located at SE corner of the stadium. The OKC Memorial in downtown OKC is memorable and moving. Sam Noble Museum (south end of campus by Lloyd Noble Arena) is cool if you're bringing younger kids. Norman and the campus area is very compact and generally easy to get around.

Friday night you should spend in Bricktown in downtown OKC. Lots of great restaurants and bars. Norman has many too, a few more that I didn't mention above are Brothers and The Garage on Main Street for burgers.

Campus Corner will be rocking all day on Saturday for pre-game. Find a table at Louie's, O'Connell's or Logan's and you can drink and watch games all day. Weather is going to be perfect so there should be lots of good outdoor activity. Have a great time in Norman, looking forward to the return trip next year!

Hated Switzer in college and the NFL, but in his retirement years he's awesome! Last of the good ole storyteller head coaches and he isn't shy about expounding on the recruiting tricks... Some money here...a free A there...everyone did it... He just did it better! I'm a big Switzer fan now.

That's great . . . Barry is an original, overcame a lot as a young man, became a legendary coach, always speaks his mind, lived large, won 3 MNC's for OU, and is widely-revered in Oklahoma and by OU fans everywhere . . . we still call him The King. He has his primary home in Norman, visible all around town, always friendly with fans, comes to most OU games, and a big part of the program.

The Switzer Center covers OU football from the beginning, all four coaches who have won 100+ games at OU, bowl history, players, lots of trophies, cool football memorabilia.

Did a wiki search on your past coaches...your second Vernon Parrington was a Pulitzer Prize winner...fascinating story...mainly did this last week to bone up on Bud Wilkinson and Chuck Fairbanks... But had never linked Jim Tatum as the guy who succeeded Bear at Maryland and then won a NC...'s why I've cut down on Wikipedia...have to raise a daughter... You have a cool program... hope to learn more.

If your in brick town and want beer go to Tapworks. They have a huge variety of beers. Tap and bottle. Stay away form Bricktown Brewery. If you want a good steak go to Mickey Mantles, or just north BT is Red Prime Steam.

If you are in Norman on Friday and want some entertainment head south of town to Riverwind Casino. Not far form town. They have good food, alcohol and gambling.

Before the game hit up the tailgates, O'Connels or there used to be a cigar shop north of campus that had free beer.

We have a tailgate and will post the location later in the week.

Will also post more info tonight.

I recommend O'Connells on campus corner or The Mont that is a short 5 minute walk from campus corner. Campus corner is usually quite packed. 747 and Logie's on campus corner are where most students go to drink. 747 is a little bit cleaner but more expensive. Also a Fuzzy's, Chimy's, Diamond Dogs, Louie's. All places with cheaper beer and good food on Campus Corner.

If you want to get away from campus, then McNellies is a great place. A large variety of beers (over 200 different choices), good food. Also the Garage has some of the best burgers in Norman. S&B's Burgers also is a good place in Norman, it's right next to the Brewhouse. All of these places are on Main street, about a 3 minute drive from campus.

I agree that Riverwind is a fun place to go. I went Friday night before the LA Tech game and it was pretty packed.

I can't tell you a whole lot about Bricktown other than it's a very fun place to go. Lot's of great eating places and bars. If you don't mind traveling 20 minutes.

Tailgating surrounds the stadium. Most are set up along Lindsey street across from the stadium or on Jenkins St. on the Northeast side of the stadium. Most tailgates welcome visitors, but you may have to pay $5-$10 to eat. But it's always fun just to walk around and meet people and drink.

I saw someone on here asking about sneaking in liquor. It's fairly easy. My friends and I would sneak the travel bottles in our boots. They only check bags, no pat downs. Just don't put it in jacket pockets or make it obvious.

If you are driving up from Texas, buy beer in Texas! :)
Even though you can get higher point beer in OK, it's only in liquor stores, not cold. Liquor stores, however, can't sell the cheaper beer (Bud light, Bud, Miller light, coors light, ect.)

I'm sure I'm missing some key points, but just ask me or any of the other OU fans on here.

How many Tenn fans are expecting to come? Has there been any estimates? I believe the visitor section is 6k or so, I assume that will be solid orange with some orange sprinkled around the rest of the stadium.

Hope you enjoy a great trip. I've gone to Washington, Florida State and Notre Dame the past few years - outside of normal Big 12 stops - and we've always been home first, then away. I've only heard outstanding things about Norman, and were always treated extremely well in return. It will be no different for you Vols, despite your color orange, and I'm looking forward to the trip to Knox next year.

I'd recommend staying in Norman, simply because it's a college football weekend. But, the Norman hotels sell out quick and I know a lot of folks stay in OKC. I'd recommend Friday night, Campus Corner - The Mont, Louie's, O'Connell's, Logans, 747, in any order really. There's some smaller hole in the wall bars as well. I'd just bar hop, and you'll have a good time.

On Saturday, by 10am or so it'll be pretty nuts around town. I'd recommend getting to campus, parking, and exploring from there. Campus Corner is fine as well - my personal favorite is Logan's for the TVs and atmosphere, but there will be beer vendors on the street as well. At some point, explore the east and south sides of the stadium where the majority of the tailgating will go down.

Enjoy!

One of the Oklahoma posters said that things would be hopping by 10am in Norman. I don't think that's going to be the case. The game starts at 7am so I'd say things will start getting kicked off around noon. The La Tech game started at 6:00 and I showed up to the stadium at 12:30. Traffic was really light and most tailgaters were just starting to set up.

Who is coming to Norman that tailgates at Volunteer home games?
