Oklahoma impressed by Tenn's stadium, fans, and traditions

"What a splendid setting for college football. What a great passion and tradition the Volunteers have for the sport. What a superb experience they have created for fans who arrive for the first time or the umpteenth time. . . . Of all the places I’ve been, I’d rank Tennessee with Notre Dame as the best place to go. . . . It’s not just the stadium atmosphere. It’s the campus and the history and the landscape and the general feeling you get that this is special. It’s the fans’ passion and deportment.

Tennessee fans were classy and hospitable. . . . It’s the attitude that while they’re awfully proud of their traditions and history, they’re also respectful of others'."

Well stated and high praise, indeed!!

The two articles cited do not reflect the opinions of Oklahoma fans; they constitute the observations of Oklahoma sports writers.

Getting lucky and escaping with stealing a victory is giving their fans humble pie.

Had they lost, we would hear none of this. Just sour grapes.

Had they lost, they would be claiming once again, Stoops poops on the big stage.

Instead, for us, it's Butch pooped on big stage.....yet again!

I am a fan, not a sportswriter. I have been following the Sooners on the road since the 50's so Neyland was not my first rodeo. I will give you my honest, unvarnished opinion of the entire weekend and you can take it for what it is......one man's opinion who is first a Sooner but second a huge college football fan.

Let's start with Knoxville. What I saw was beautiful and I was particularly impressed with Market Square. The campus is not all that pretty. It reminded me of UT-Austin or T A&M. It looks more like a small city rather than a traditional college campus.

The Vol Navy is everything it is cracked up to be. We rented a houseboat and frankly I didn't know what to expect but I was thinking in-slip accommodations rather than tying off with other boats. The result is a cocktail party with people moving from boat to boat and Sooners and Vols intermingling in an harmonious salute to college football. It was a tremendous experience.

The game atmosphere was off the charts. I have followed the Sooners to numerous away games but when you take into consideration the entire package, including how the game transpired, this was the best away game experience I have ever had. I was not upset by the way our team celebrated after the game until I saw the replay and the obscene gesture. This unabashed joy is what we see from both sides at the end of our annual game with Texas so you might take it as a compliment. The victory really meant something to our team and they showed it.

Neyland is in bad need of renovation. I had been warned that you guys really pack 'em in but the seating was beyond ridiculous and the egress/ingress is terrible; as are the concessions and restrooms. You can be rightly proud of the size and the incredible fan generated excitement during the game but the amenities are very poor. You can joke about stadiums in the Big 12 that are smaller but many of them have modern easily accessible concessions and large up to date restrooms but they also have elevators and escalators and attached parking garages.....much like stadiums you see in the NFL. The TCU & Baylor stadiums are incredible from a fan friendly point of view.

Finally, I thought your audio/visual creative was very amateurish. Now, OU has been named the #1 audio/visual effect IT dept. in the nation for several years so I admit I am spoiled. The one thing I thought was absolutely terrible was the way the PA announcer would repeatedly announce the down and distance while we were calling out or O signals.....truly bush league.

The Tennessee fans were wonderful, welcoming us to Neyland and simple being very respectful overall. In the final analysis, it was the best away game experience I have ever enjoyed. The only other stadium that I would compare the noise level to is Kyle Field and that was before their recent remodel and expansion. They had 104,000 plus last Saturday and I cannot imagine how loud it was.

Good luck the rest of the way. I have said in other posts that I think you can win the East and I am not patronizing when I say it nor am I thinking in terms of it making us look good. Both teams will learn from this game and improve as the season goes along. Barring injuries, I think the rest of the 2015 season looks very bright for both the Vols and the Sooners.

What section were you in? They've renovated and widened a lot of the walkways in the stadium, but if you were in the Double Letter sections (MM, NN, OO, PP, etc.) under the jumbotron, then yes, you experienced the absolute worse ingress/egress situation. They have yet to widen the walkways up there and it is ridiculous. I sat in MM, and I couldn't believe how narrow everything was. I hope there is a plan to fix that, because I noticed there was space to widen and extend walkways out.

Now they know what we've known for a long time. :good!:

It's great to be appreciated but if the second half had been like the first those types of posts would be must less visible.

Probably sour grapes but I don't even like reading posts like that. It's like getting sonned, patted on the head.

I hope they lose every game remaining on their schedule. THAT"S what I think of Oklahoma. Their Coach has no class and neither does their players. OKIE is easy to hate. Thusly, I hate em. With fervor.

In Football, as in Life, there's winning and losing. Nothing else matters. Last Saturday felt as bad as losing your woman. SO, now the guy that took her is telling me how well I took care of her? LMAO!

I wonder if we would have shown class or been a bunch of jack wagons had we won the game. I would like to say we would have shown class but after reading a bunch of posts on volnation,I doubt it. It's easy to be humble after getting out scored in the 4th quarter then to lose in OT after leading the entire game, the sooner fans around me were very quite until they ha something to cheer for and as for the getting I. And out of the stadium, no very many fans left until after the game was over creating the traffic jam of people and cars. All I ask is when we go down to the swamp that we show class as we are winning and once we have won.
GO VOLS! RUN the TABLE!

We've experienced such heartache, who knows how they would have acted. I can only say I would have left the stadium pumped to have beaten a meaningful team. Would I have flipped people off or talking smack? No I wasn't raised that way. I walked away from this game with a hatred for OU football. I have no respect for the Stoops or Striker. As for the nobody that flipped us off, I don't remember seeing him do squat during the game.

Great fans, probably some of the best I've encountered.

A good team with some real hard workers and talent amongst them.

Stryker, Byrd, and Stoops are examples of what's wrong with college football (and perhaps any sport) today. That being said, they earned the right to act like fools on the national stage.

#1! Named by who or named by what, and why haven't I ever heard of that? ... ever? In my life?

UT's media team is just fine, thank you very much, and has been ahead of the curve for ages, now that I think about it. If you think it's amateurish, well ... you have fun with that then.

I don't mind your other stuff but don't dog the media, they do good work.

OU fans aren't the problem. The OU program itself with the talk from Stoops and Striker particularly. The players and how they acted after the win was silly. However, I will say that the players are kids who are thrown into situations where thousands, or millions, hang on their every word/action. Sometimes they act dumb. But it was a big game and emotions ran high for everyone. OU isn't what they used to be but they got it done on the field. All this talk about sour grapes and the little trash talking is silly. Both UT and OU fans are some of the best I've ever met.

Life goes on, pal. We've all lost plenty of heart breakers.

As for the Stoops hate on here, I really don't get it. You guys deal with Saban and Miles in your conference and you think Stoops is an *******? I'm actually surprised.

UT couldn't proved a better home field advantage than it did. Tip of the hat for surviving and outlasting it to OU.
