Apparently Beamer is highly regarded in Norman from his time as an assistant there. If they hired him you would have to think they wiffed on a few guys
Their only hope is building on the success Riley had with QBs, IMO. The high-powered offense is why they've been able to recruit nationally. If they go defense with this hire, they could fall even further than I thought. They will have worst recruiting territory in the SEC and once they go 8-4 or 7-5 and all the recruits realize they are no more likely to make the playoffs than Arkansas or Kentucky... look out. They could turn into the next Nebraska.
Sumlin won at Houston. Surely he could win at TAM... right? If Fickell can win at Cincinnati, he can win at Oklahoma. Would hat to see him go there.
He's not necessarily wrong about recruiting. They survive on Texas. Being in the SEC with Texas and TAM also in the SEC... could hurt them a lot. That’s laughable at best. They could hire the waterboy and still be ok. It’s whoever they hire at the OC and DC positions that will tell the tale. If they go with a defensive minded HC, then I would expect that he will go out and hire a good if not great OC. Vice versa if they hire an offensive minded HC. Stoops was a DC when they hired him and he brought in Leach from KY to run the offense. Who did Leach bring in to be the QB? Heupel. They’ll be alright.
Wow! When you put it like that ...Sumlin won at Houston. Surely he could win at TAM... right?
Fickell might succeed but guys often don't do as well when they step up like this. Cincy has only played 4 teams with a winning record this year. They've played some truly awful teams. Notre Dame was a good win. None of their other wins came against teams that wouldn't be blown off the field by UT.
At least this season... his resume looks as thin as Butch Jones' was when he got the UT job. In five years at Cincy including this year, Fickell has beaten a total of 15 teams with a winning record.
Oklahoma does not have a divine right to be a good team anymore than Tennessee does. Upheaval, mismanagement, and plain incompetence can derail OK, just like UT, Nebraska, etc. It hasn't been THAT long ago (mid-90s, pre-Stoops) that Oklahoma was as much as or a worse grease fire than any of the Dooley-Botch-Pruitt teams. That’s laughable at best. Are you referring to the four years between Gibbs and Stoops when they were not bowl eligible? That seems like a Sunday drive through the park compared to our past decade and a half.Oklahoma does not have a divine right to be a good team anymore than Tennessee does. Oklahoma's record 1989-1999 looks a lot like our ten year stretch from 2009-2019. So their downturn maybe wasnt as deep or impactful as ours... if they had hired a Dooley or Pruitt type instead of Stoops, it certainly could have been. Are you referring to the four years between Gibbs and Stoops when they were not bowl eligible?
