Oklahoma Board chatter ahead of Tennessee game

Just my perspective...we don't really know if Baker Mayfield any better than Knight, or not. The optimists are placing their hopes at the feet of the new OC, Lincoln Riley. We saw what he did at East Carolina with a little-known QB and we're hoping he can repeat that success in the Big 12. Heck, the QB could be Cody Thomas (Soph), who ran a similar offense in high school with great success.

My prediction is be ready for a healthy dose of Samaje Perine with some short passes to Joe Mixon and Alex Ross thrown to try and get those two out in some space. From what I saw of ECU film, the new OC likes to air it out now and then, so keep an eye on Shepard and Dede Westbrook on fly and post routes.

Defense, who knows? Hopefully, our new secondary coach is making a difference. One name to remember...Kahlil Haughton.

I can't wait. I'll be wandering the parking lot with my young bride before the game trying to mooch food off you guys, so be kind...:)

Wow, from what you are saying it seems like a more Alabama/Lane Kiffin style offense. Lots of running with some short passes and then air it out just to keep the D on their toes.
We will have a very strong DLine ready for trenches against the run and will put a lot of pressure on whatever QB is back there but it is kind of up in the air with the LB's. We have a lot of talent on paper but need to see how they perform. Perine will be an excellent challenge.
I just looked up Kahlil Haughton and wasn't able to find much. Safety from Midway High, rated pretty well during recruiting, 6'2" 180 lbs. Do you expect him to start?

What happened to Worley? Graduated? Dude was strong, good arm, but perhaps didn't have the mobility you're looking for.

As for improvements in the OU front, changes to defensive scheme (switching to a 4-3 maybe)....but overall it's about better coaching from the new position coaches, specifically the new OC. At the very least, he can't be worse than FUJoshHeupel (no joke, that was his nickname). Basically, expect a bunch of new looks frim this O, and a ton of passing.

I think the game in Neyland boils down to UT's strong secondary vs OU's pass game. Expect a lot of short passes to running backs....will probably attack the edges as well.

What sort of game you thInk UT will bring? You have a new OC in place, yeah? I worry about your WR corps....definitely elite. Should OU also expect a more pass-heavy attack?

Whoa, so this is a bit different than your other OU counterpart on here. An "air attack" I would assume to mean that you won't be heavily leaning on Perine as a work horse. As a Vol fan, I hope that is the case. Our DLine isn't going to allow much time for a passing attack and we have Cam Sutton back there. We will play very well against a pass first offense, its when we get lulled to sleep by pounding runs and then react to a pass that worries me. Our speed will cover the edges well and I suspect our MLB position will be the weak link early in the season.

About a change to our offense, yes and no. Yes because since we played last season Justin Worley got hurt and has now graduated and our QB that came in for the last 5.5 games is WAY more mobile. Our offense has been revamped since his emergence and will look completely different to an OU fan but for us that follow the Vols, I think this year will look the same as the end of last season with a few twists. We are hopeful that our new OC has worked hard with the O line to provide a little more time in the backfield. Also, our WR crew has been really good for about 3 years but is great now, we just needed someone that could get them the ball. Hopefully with an improved line and an athletic QB, we'll be able to move the chains more consistently even with your boy Striker! That guy destroyed us last year. Look for lots of plays to the edges whether it be a WR screen, an outside run, a QB draw, etc. Hopefully every once in a while we will be able to connect more often on a long pass. Either way, this game is going to be ELECTRIC.

You bring up a lot of good points. To sum up, if your O is a s good as your D was last year, then you have a strong contender. I appreciate that you were able to give me a good general rundown of your prospects as they stand, without having to mention too many names.

I thought your LBs were quite strong last year, to go along with a tight secondary. The way you have been recruiting over the past few years, it's not surprising your front 7 is quality. Do you have confidence in your position coaches? What do you perceive to be your weaknesses on this front?

If I had to game plan AGAINST OU, I would attack their VERY young secondary. Do NOT throw against Sanchez. Dude is skinny, but makes plays. Also, I would avoid running straight up the middle. As you probably have already figured, defensively, try to force the QB into making quick decisions. Mayfield is a gamer, but prine to interceptions. Perhaps your biggest concern should be the combination of Perine and Mixon: the former because he is a straightup beast, the latter because he is a wide receiver in a RB's body. UT's front 7 is respected, but they will need to play mistake-free football to get the W. Of course, I could say the same about OU's offense hahahaa~.

Either way, this matchup is an intriguing clash of two bluebloods who both have something to prove, and Neyland is as good a venue as any to enjoy such a contest. Thanks for the info. It's 2am in Korea, so I best be getting some sleep.~

posistion coaches imo:
DL
DB
RB
LB
ST/TE
WR
QB (technically new this year)
OL

the top three are the clear top three there, while down to ST/TE is good (want to keep) while the rest are still question marks.

LB is a question because we lost an AA candidate (before he went and allegedly raped a girl) no matter how good your recruiting is you are going to notice that drop off. Runs up the middle will probably be more effective against us than we would like. Replacing the AA, and young unproven talent. if this game was later in the year, or even a bowl game, I would feel different. screens and other short yardage passes will also probably pay dividends as well.

good to hear that the best way to slow you down is to attack the QB because that is what we are the best at. our offense is predicated on getting into space, if you can force us inside it gets rid of comfort zone but we still have good players there it just isn't our bread and butter. also O line is still questionable. which weakens our whole Offense.

Replacing Worley with Dobbs changed our offense (for the better) tremendously. Dobbs has a lot more mobility and is usually very smart with the football. Dobbs is perfect for the type of offense we want to run. Worley posed as no threat to keep those read options.

Our bowl game vs Iowa is a good example of our new offense clicking along. There are highlights on YouTube.

I admit I have little knowledge of the Stoops/Riley philosophy on offense. My perspective is based on 1) Perine has proven to be an excellent RB, and 2) Lincoln Riley's offenses at ECU averaged about 57% pass/43% run, which IMO is a fairly balanced attack. I think (hope) he is smart enough to use all his weapons.

Meanwhile, at the Florida boards

Worley graduated. Dude had a lot of heart but took a tremendous beating last season. Our oline was awful but did progress as the season played out.

Pretty good assessment, however I noticed our Oline looked better when Dobbs came in. Agree with the heart thing. But I also think he had concrete cleats, and no peripheral vision. A mobile QB makes a big difference.

Anyone who has anything negative to say about this program is either ignorant, an idiot, in denial, or is only looking into the window of the last 8 years or so. I can't wait for Stoops and Co. to prance into Neyland on their high horse and realize how dangerous this roster is. GBO.

The roster and the stadium. 106k can make your knees and mind weak. The most dangerous and intimidating place to play in the world.

There is going to be a large number of superficial fans that are going to be surprised by our success this year. We arent on the radar of the casual fan just yet, but its coming.
