Oklahoma Board chatter ahead of Tennessee game

Thanks very much. I enjoy reading the posts about team progress, as well as the good intel on your SEC opponents. Your defense is looking pretty stout; can't remember the linebackers name, but he pretty much prevented OU's otherwise dominant backs from creating havoc. Like Jalen Hurd a lot; a more experienced line should allow his talent to make other teams worry (not that they already don't). If the Vols can execute good offensive gameplans consistently, I would not be surprised at all to see them at (or very close to) the top of the East. That Georgia game is one I won't be missing.

We will have a different QB this time too. He is a tiny bit more...shifty. Should be a good game.

What type of improvements should we be looking for from OU? We heard about a new QB (is he that much better than Knight?), and of course Perigne (spelling).

Just my perspective...we don't really know if Baker Mayfield any better than Knight, or not. The optimists are placing their hopes at the feet of the new OC, Lincoln Riley. We saw what he did at East Carolina with a little-known QB and we're hoping he can repeat that success in the Big 12. Heck, the QB could be Cody Thomas (Soph), who ran a similar offense in high school with great success.

My prediction is be ready for a healthy dose of Samaje Perine with some short passes to Joe Mixon and Alex Ross thrown to try and get those two out in some space. From what I saw of ECU film, the new OC likes to air it out now and then, so keep an eye on Shepard and Dede Westbrook on fly and post routes.

Defense, who knows? Hopefully, our new secondary coach is making a difference. One name to remember...Kahlil Haughton.

I can't wait. I'll be wandering the parking lot with my young bride before the game trying to mooch food off you guys, so be kind...:)

Yes, but Kiffin and Dooley were both good at getting some high star guys that were not team players. neither seemed to get the "whole" team concept like CBJ.

The only problem is there is not a team in the country who wouldn't have taken most of the guys that weren't "team players," and probably 90% would've taken the others.

Who says no to Bryce Brown or Rogers? Nu'keese? Douglas?

Fact is, many of the best athletes in sports come from troubled upbringings in more than one way. Sometimes they work out, sometimes they don't.

Makes sense but I would never recruit a kid that needed help with discipline, if I was horrible at providing it.

I hope you like pinto beans and cornbread. You want an RC cola or sweet tea?

Excuse me but thats a punk attitude. We should be doing all our talking on the field, not running our
mouths in the stands. And quite frankly, fans like you are an embarrassment. Sorry.

What are you talking about? Let me try to explain what I mean. It's like I've heard about LSU fans they might give you hell and call you tiger bait but then let you hang out in their tail gate and offer you somethin from their grill. There is nothing wrong with a little game day smack talk like yelling mark right sucks! Gotta get stomped today ! Or were backkkk!!! Yelljng things to opposing fans is not being a punk. It's part of the passion of football in the south. Have a little good old fashioned trash talk back and forth but also be hospitable. Example : did yall enjoy that azz whooping? Yall aren't gonna have us to kick around anymore! Hope yall had a good time have a safe trip!😝

Love 'em! Your beverage choices gave an idea. Arnold Palmer drinks a mixture of lemonade and iced tea and it's called an Arnold Palmer. Maybe we could mix RC cola and sweet tea and call it a Bubba Watson? Boo Weekley?

Douglas? Aaron Douglas?

If you describe him objectively it would look something like this:

A top end recruit who left one historically great school "for problems" and ended up at another only to die tragically due to drug abuse (most likely stemming from an undiagnosed mental disorder.)

Just because he didn't end up a criminal, come from a poor family, or was a minority doesn't mean he shouldn't be counted among the attrition. And just because he wasn't seen as a "problem" player doesn't mean he didn't have need for help, at both institutions really, more than any of the players listed also. Not getting caught doesn't make you innocent of a crime, it just makes you not guilty.

He's honestly a great example of why athletes at the college or professional level (and really all college students) should have therapy sessions to try and determine problems of crime, problems at home, etc. Because most of these kids are given anything they want in their home towns and treated as demigods once they get on campus. If there is a problem detected before college it's often written off by parents not wanting to admit it or teachers/coaches not wanting to ruin something. Having people at a school who's job it is to find problems, regardless of the kid's intelligence, athletic ability, family wealth, etc. is of great importance, because it's the age where everyone starts drinking, drugs, sleeping around more, and the stress and expectations (especially for athletes, and even more for athletes in a legacy family) can destroy some and nobody ever notice until it's too late.

What happened to Worley? Graduated? Dude was strong, good arm, but perhaps didn't have the mobility you're looking for.

As for improvements in the OU front, changes to defensive scheme (switching to a 4-3 maybe)....but overall it's about better coaching from the new position coaches, specifically the new OC. At the very least, he can't be worse than FUJoshHeupel (no joke, that was his nickname). Basically, expect a bunch of new looks frim this O, and a ton of passing.

I think the game in Neyland boils down to UT's strong secondary vs OU's pass game. Expect a lot of short passes to running backs....will probably attack the edges as well.

What sort of game you thInk UT will bring? You have a new OC in place, yeah? I worry about your WR corps....definitely elite. Should OU also expect a more pass-heavy attack?

Yes, and I agree. When I said team players, I didn't mean that the players themselves weren't team players, but that Dooley and Kiffen focused more on recruiting flashy guys and less on building the team needs. Like the infamous example of a recruiting class without a single offensive lineman. Like using a scholarship on Nance who would never have a chance of seeing the field to get a receiver with obvious character flaws. Butch Jones 'gets' it.

Would have to agree. Also, I'm on the (free) Sooner boards all the time; it's safe to say the overwhelming majority of posters--
1. --view the game as tight win or tight loss. No slam-dunk.
2. --respect the rich Vol tradition, fan base and stadium
3. --correctly (in my view) see the 2015 Vol team as one that continues to mature, gain momentum and gel under Butch's philosophy.

OU has also not been 'standing still'. This makes the clash at Neyland really hard to predict, as both teams would likely have made improvements/adjustments in the right direction. Good board, by the way~!

You can thank Freak for that. He's the one in the corner sniffing glue.....no not him......third from the left.

KoreaSooner,

Where in Korea are you? I've spent a bit of time there, mostly at Chinhae. Last trip was a 4 month one working on their KDX-III DDG. That trip was mostly Busan, which I couldn't stop calling "Pusan" because I'm old like that...

Best fried chicken in the world...

Worley graduated. Dude had a lot of heart but took a tremendous beating last season. Our oline was awful but did progress as the season played out. If our Oline can play average to above average our offense will be formidable. Two 5* RB's, a very smooth and mobile QB complimented by a group of talented receivers, well, you get the picture.
I'm excited to see how well this offense can mesh early on - but I have no doubts our defense will be nasty. The clash between UT & OU will be one to remember. If your OC want's to throw the ball around, all I can say is your Oline had better bring their A game to protect your QB.

I'm in Daegu. Not too far from Busan. Been here 13 years. You helped build the KTX? Cool...it's a popular train, definitely useful. Sounds like you're an engineer...no?

As for the fried chicken, I can't stand it. But, Busan's may be far better hahaaaa~

Whats the word coming out of training camps? Is there a new offensive philosophy?

It is essentially Butch's offense. DeBord was considered a good fit because he and Butch installed a lot of the concepts of the offense at CMU, so isn't a new philosophy. The biggest thing about Bajakian was he would run off a string of good play calls and then completely get away from everything that was successful. For some reason he would call great games against UGA but was inconsistent at best against everyone else.

I think this hits and you can even go deeper. I think he was young and hand not yet gone through a season where they had a good pass game but then played an excellent D and secondary so in game changes had to be made wether to the routes or from a pass to run attack. I think that's the big thing in the NFL and that Ohio State and Bama and teams have done more recently are just the small in game tweek from what they did last week or through the season that isn't working in the playoffs and big tough games. I think Dbo will bring that experience and fluid change through the game.

I also personally think we will be more run heavy on offense (yet balanced) and will have one of the better pass D and secondary units in all of the land.

Hopefully that nonchalant attitude carries over to their players as well, I love when we are the underdogs. No reason we shouldn't win by 10+ if we play like we should.

Only problem is that we will likely be favored in that game. Especially now that we know the early line has us -3.

No difference in philosophy. Among the criteria for DeBord's selection was that he could hit the ground running with the current scheme.

The only potential new wrinkle mentioned thus far in the playbook is when Coach DeBord said they're looking at adding some two-back sets, and some more power run options.

I haven't seen any mention of anything else truly new on the O side of the ball. Having a new coordinator on the sideline of course will bring a new mindset in play calling which will be interesting to follow as the season plays out.

Interesting point. We do have two guys on staff that might have an advantage as far as knowing what might be going on between Richt's ears. I know they are defensive coaches but it might have something to do with it.
