I know the game. I watched it. I didn't ask you what happened when we were on offense.
The more plays Florida has to run, the less likely Florida was going to win. If the players on the field took a better angle to stop that play at 20 yards, I don't think Florida goes down to win. With a minute and a half to go and 40 yards, I believe we stop them.
But you're already jumping to blaming Butch for something you believe would have happened in a hypothetical situation.
Florida's offense is completely inept. They would never have scored on us without huge amounts of luck, which they had in spades that day. The touchdown on the prior drive however is on Butch, Florida had given up already and then with the timeout they decided to roll the dice.
It all--the whole "best 8-4 team" and all that--goes to the central question that comes up at the end of every season: so how good are we, how do we stack up against the rest of the nation?
I think we're probably somewhere around the 15th best team in the country. In the way that matters: who we would beat most of the time, and who would beat us most of the time, and who would we probably split a series of meetings with, on the field.
Glancing over at another thread with very similar topic, some think we're one of the four best teams in the country. Others think somewhere around the 10 mark. Some think our current #25 CFP ranking (likely to shift up to #22 or #23 later today) is about right.
In football, there are very few absolutes when ranking teams. Even head-to-head doesn't always tell the story, because teams change over the course of the season. That team you beat narrowly in September might be better than you by December.
For the "who cares" and "it doesn't matter" crowd, one has to wonder why you spend time on a football fan forum at all. None of this matters in the grand scheme of things, it's just a pastime. But as a pastime, it matters to us. We're proud of our team and want our pride reflected in the opinions of the nation as a whole, as measured by polls and ranking systems.
So that's what this thread is about.
That plus a bit of good-natured teasing with Wylo.![]()
Mostly I agree with you, except that Tennessee has proven they can beat scrubs. That's it. They got Georgia, barely, but for them. Butch has shown he can't beat the biggest competition. So the logic that Tennessee would beat, or even scare the top 10-15 teams in the country, is being very generous.
And I'm always down for good natured fun. Which I why I yank so many of the flocks' chains.

I would phrase it slightly differently. I would say, "Butch hasn't yet shown he can beat the biggest competition."
And that may be the single major philosophical difference between you and me, Wylo. You've already condemned the man forever, while I still look forward to seeing where he takes us once he has all the pieces in place.
We agree he's not perfect (none of us are). But I believe we've yet to see his best, while you think he has peaked.
Time will tell which of us has the right of is. :hi:
That's mostly true. The difference is that other teams don't need a decade to beat the best teams. Or 6-7 years as Butch believes. Butch made the biggest mistakes in the biggest games. That is who he is.
When can we expect better? 2016? 17? 18? Ever?
negavol. You remind me of a 13 year old. I'll bet you have been a Patriot fan since 2010.Best 8-4 team this year? Probably. Nobody was upset about that statement.
But the fact you're bragging about 4 losses says plenty about your loser mentality.
Yay for us. We are an awesome team. Only 4 losses away from mattering.
wow. The farce is strong with youThe team deserves plenty of blame for each loss. They are the "amateurs"
Butch is overpaid and still can't figure out 12+2=14. Still thinks field goals beat quality teams. Still likes to help opponents with timeouts. Butch is a millionaire coach and deserves the blame. He's the head football coach. It's ready for you guys to just lump everything on there players because you pray that Butch is the savior.
Underachieved is one way to look at it
Another way to look at it is that the team turned out to be better than what non-fans predicted. At the beginning of the season, I wanted us to be better than a lot of good teams, but I didn't know if we legitimately would be. Turned out we are. If the team can turn 1 more possession per game into points, then next year has the opportunity to be special. And the year after that and the year after that. The team is finally built.
The only people who think the team underachieved are the Vols fans. Nobody else expected us to be elite unless they were making "bold predictions" that basically never come true as it is.
I sure wish our defense took better tackling angles on that 4th down play. I sure wish there was a slightly strong(er) right-to-left wind that one time. I wish some quarterbacks were only slightly more likely to fall instead of breaking out of tackles. But it happens. Why get salty or angry?
Win lose or draw, I'm a VFL. You are bandwagon.
Not true. He's been been on VolNation going on 8 years and I'm guessing has been a Vols fan for many, many more years. His opinion differs with yours, doesn't see things the way you do with regards to the headcoach/coaching staff. Doesn't make him a bandwagon fan.
