Oil Rig Explosion

Its not the government's mess to clean up. Its BP's. They should be the ones looking into using/paying for these skimmers.

I agree BP should be using the skimmer, and the EPA should be working with them on the oil/water discharge

the gov't surely woudl have billed bp for use of the skimmers.

This. The only thing worse than making excuses for BP's apparent negligence is making excuses for the ridiculous way the administration hasn't handled this. I am not expecting miracles, just the exhaustion of every good option.

Apparently the government team has revised its estimate for the oil flow. They are now estimating 35,000 to 60,000 BPD. I don't know what new data was used for this, but it may have something to do with the sensors that were recently deployed.

The LMRP cap is capturing 15,000 BPD. That would mean 20,000 to 45,000 BPD net. That's a lot of oil.

I would really like to see the analysis for this just so I would know how much trust to put in the numbers....

Lightning struck the drill ship collecting oil and it caught fire, but was quickly put out with no injuries. Bank of America/merril just announced they wont trade oil with BP. (out of fear they may go BK?) BP also announced they are selling over 100 gas stations. They are obviously trying to raise cash. I feel like we are watching a company in the death throes

Sound be interesting to hear what Obama has to say tonight, I am sure he is going to hammer them, and maybe promote NatGas.

There are lots of obvious losers in this mess. However, there also seems to be one clear winner, IMO. Toyota. BP will probably be paying the fisherman in yen.

Just heard some rumblings of a possible leak in the seabed due to the casings. Anyone have any info on this? Sounds like it could be a major problem as it might make the relief wells ineffective.

That has certainly been discussed for a while as a concern, but I haven't seen any new evidence that would suggest it exists. Do you know if there have been any recent developments?

I honestly don't know what's going on anymore. I was spending quite a bit of time following it up until this last week. I was just under the assumption that they're trying to capture as much as possible until the relief wells are finished. Which is why that caught my attention. If the relief wells don't work, I don't know what would be the plan.

Ding ding. If you (admin) want to lay it all on BP don't sell us a line of BS that you've been on it since day one and are doing everything possible.

They've been doing everything BP was able to do and not much more.

I'm truly shocked at the incompetent response so far. I thought for sure they would have learned from Katrina and they certainly have no problem with the government getting involved in anything else.

I have to wonder if they saw a political upside from the spill WRT energy policy but underestimated the political downside from not jumping on it.

You mean as opposed to avoiding every good option?

I going to watch to see what he has to say
Should be interesting

One thing jumped out at me immediately, he said he would be coordinating local, state and federal resourses to solve the problem, I would expect that to start happening within two days, or at worst two weeks but to say that now after two months???

Let me tell you, I am completely reassured now dear leader.

Big winner??

George Soros, the big invester in Brazilain offshore drilling, whose loans are guaranteed by US taxpayer dollars.

BTW, BP was one of the original lobbyists for a cap and trade system, that's where the real money is.

Can't wait for obamacare to kick in about four years after we start paying for it, you just gotta love bureaurocratic solutions.

Did you know you still have to fill out a form and get government approval in Russia to loan you car to a neighbor to drive to the corner grocery, yep, love that red tape, it's like a bow tied ribbon dilivering us to some alien culture if you're in to that sort of thing.

I've been reading Tigerdroppings trying to get an understanding of these well casings being raptured or possibly, but highly unlikely, collapsed. Though, I really can't understand enough to get a definitive answer on whether I should expect the relief wells to work. For now, my understanding is that nobody knows the conditions of the casings, and it's probably impossible to tell enough to determine the chances of them working.

Hayward estimates size of oil field at 2B gallons - Yahoo! News

And you gotta think that estimate is low the way BP has been

BP has been grossing just under $300,000,000,000 annually for the last five years.

You're getting good a beating me to the punch lately. :)

I was just about to post about the same thing, Jindal got the barges moving again after a 24 hour delay by calling the White House and raising hell.

Here is another article about people just plain ignoring Obama.

Speaking of Haywood, why would he sell 1/3 of his BP stock just before the 'accident?'
