Offsides Penalty on 1st Onside Kick (Pic)

Ok .. . I've just watched the replay again. Anybody saying the kicker was offsides is nuts. Medley starts about 2 yards for the ball and inside the line. The he goes straight to the ball with his plant foot just over the line since he's right footed and kicking to his right - which is perfectly legal.

I went back and replayed it over and over in slo-mo. Only guy offsides was the kicker. Technically, he was offsides, but never seen that called before.

I'm no rules expert, but a kicker's non-kicking foot will always be ahead of his kicking foot at the point of contact. If it wasn't they would never get any power or distance on their kicks. If they were eligible to be offsides, no kicker would ever tee the ball up on exactly the 40-yard line.

So, in your mind, the kicker can run down to the endzone, lay down and make a grass angel, run back across the line, and kick the ball... Think about what you're saying
Pretty much... as long as he makes it back with time on the play clock. The play never starts until he kicks the ball.

I think we should have gotten the ball, but the refs just handled the whole situation so poorly.
No explanation that there were 2 penalties, and then they called offsides out of the blue without specifying what player actually went offsides.
It's amazing how many messed up calls there are in the SEC. They need to be much more consistent with holding calls IMO.

I'd also be pissed if I was a Mizz fan for that pass interference call in the first half. That wasn't even remotely close.

It doesn't matter if they were offsides. They called an illegal touching. And then called us offsides AFTER a review.

Refs blew that one hard.

Somebody else may have already said it, but I was at the game and can guarantee you they did make the offsides call before the review and said the penalty was declined. A few of us were discussing it in the stands that the review would only lead to another kick, but most people didn't hear it, because they were booing. Now, it definitely looks like a bad call, but they did not wait until after the review to call it.

Both penalties were announced before the review. I have added a 45 second clip from the radio broadcast where you can here the offsides announced with no number given immediately after the illegal touching is called.

Another problem I have is in the replay, both refs on that side of the field throw their beanbag and at lease one motions for the clock to start. That would signify that it was touched by Mizzou. So how is the call on the field illegal touching when the ref says it was touched by Mizzou. This would have to be a case of another ref, either from behind the play or across the field, overruling the two that are standing on that sideline. I know that this one was fixed by the review, so it really didn't change anything in the long run. I just don't understand how the "call on the field" isn't what was actually called on the field. To sum the entire thing up the crew botched the whole situation.

They blew the first call period, not one player was offside when the ball was kicked!!! And if you watch the replay the ref threw the flag before the coverage team "Vols" had went a few yards!!!

Not saying it would have made a difference, but can't say that it wouldn't have either!! They Just blew the call and looking back at it, this was a bad call period and it should have been The Vols ball with under 2 minutes left on the clock and two timeouts??? :banghead2:

Even if he was offside they can't challenge that. It's like challenging a pass interference call on an incomplete pass. It's a judgement call and can't be reviewed. Jones challenged wether the opposition touched the ball, not wether he was offside. Doesn't make any sense...

Nah, Jones did not challenge whether Missouri touched the ball. That was an official review on the first kick. Jones challenged whether or not the ball went 10 yards on the second kick.

Just got home was the second kick not 10 yards sure looked like it on the jumbo!

it was touched inches from crossing the mark. The player was beyond the line, but the ball was still behind the line. Touched it a moment too early.

We got hosed. But we should have had a sense of urgency a little sooner and it wouldn't have mattered. Our offense drove when it needed it most, but where was that earlier in the game?

Boys played hard. Now let's go to Neyland Jr., beat CandyVandy, and go to a decent bowl (Music City) and end up 7-6. It's what most of us predicted, and I am still happy with it. We've got our coach, our QB, and are only losing 4 seniors. Next years team will be a great one, I really believe it.

Go Vols!!!

Another clueless person. Herbstreit called the offsides first thing.

NO, Herbstriet thought there would be an offsides called. When there was no offsides called both he and the old retired ref agreed it was not illegal touching and any offsides could not be called on the review. Offsides is not reviewable..

Wasn't offsides. Might not have gotten the 8, but we should have had an opportunity.

Sure would have made it exciting to see what might have happened. Once again the refs took away what might have been a suspenseful ending. How many games have you ever seen a kicker being called for being " offsides"? This is the first one I can ever remember
