Offseason Moves That Need To Happen

DP or Atl mentioned that a lot of people in the biz are openly questioning why Nieds is so successful with little experience, thus his social media presence has been cut drastically.

Or hes leaving Tennessee at seasons end and doesent care to promote anymore.

Loading up with another group of high paid assistants with multiple year contracts with this peanut head as head coach is beyond stupid. Pruitt hired these guys. There his mistakes. If contracts for his assistants don’t run out this year, he should either keep them or pay their buyouts with his money.

All those coaches would have better opportunities than UT IMO.

Guys with capital in the profession aren't jumping on board a sinking ship and, whether it is this year or next, I believe the USS Pruitt is sinking.

Nobody worth a damn is coming here for a year because IF Pruitt gets another year that's all he'll get. The guy isn't a head coach and prolonging his firing is only prolonging the inevitable. His coaching is head scratching, his player development is a joke and his recruiting ability is highly suspect. The only people who may come take a job on this staff are the ones who don't mind jumping around as they're attempting to learn the trade. If Pruitt is still coach next year get ready for 2020 redux.

All of this talk on "revamping the staff" which, by the way, would be Pruitt's THIRD revamping is nuts. This is exactly why you go ahead and show Coach Gomer the door right now and wish him well in his future endeavors. Who wants to come and be a part of Pruitt's "new" staff if he even were to remain here? Most coaches aren't stupid - and the one's you really want are going to look at this situation for the dumpster fire it is and say, "I'm not going down on that ship."

So, we'll get middle tiered replacement coordinators if he comes back. Middle tiered coordinators for a bottom tiered coach is disaster. Sure, bring in a 3rd new support staff and put them on 3 year contracts you'll have to buyout at the end of next year when you do the inevitable and fire him anyway. Makes a lot of sense.

The money they would have to cough up to get rid of him next year - plus all new assistants - wouldn't be any more money than they'd cough up today by just dumping him. Plus, hire a good replacement coach and the ticket sales and ENTHUSIASM will be up headed into next fall. The potential money lost by keeping Gomer is far greater than the money they could make up by bringing new life and hope back into the program heading into next fall.

Ansley's secondary philosophy is for the DB to stare at the receiver and never look back and watch the receiver make the catch. He is the worst DB coach EVER.

Okay so assuming Pruitt is here another year, here are some moves that he should make to right the ship.

1. Fire Weinke. If Cutcliffe is let go from Duke, hire him to coach QB's. He would be salivating at the prospects of coaching Bailey, Shrout, Ty Simpson, Salter, and makes us major players for Arch Manning. Other option is move Osovet here.

2. Fire Friend. Hire Jack Bicknell from Auburn. NFL Experience. Really, I have zero reason for this. Just get rid of friend.

3. Say bye to Ansley, or demote him to DBs only. Hire Kevin Steele as DC.

4. Move Osovet to QB, move Neids back to TE/ST

5. Hire Bo Davis for DL.

6. Hire Tosh Lupoi for LB coach.

Just my suggestions. Thoughts?

A loser is a loser. It will not matter how many position coaches and coordinators get replaced. The common factor in all of this is still Pruitt. I cannot think of a single example in the modern era where a loser coach completely overhauled his staff in one season and transformed losing into winning.

Pruitt is a dead man walking and will be fired at the end of the 2021 season. I would prefer that we not spend $5-$6 million in assistants to just buy them out one year from now. Just go cheap and let us take our medicine for a season and fire him next year. Otherwise, we're just blowing money by paying two sets of assistant buyouts in back to back years. At that point, we might as well just fire Pruitt this year.

Agreed, I just have a bad feeling that he will still be here next year. He’s handicapped Helton and Chaney.

I have the same bad feeling. My hope is that with 3 SEC schools making a move on their coach during a "Covid" year, it will take some credibility out of the excuse that Fulmer and company had locked and loaded when trying to defend the decision to keep Pruitt. Things could get interested after A&M runs us off the field with a hickory switch. Maybe?

If any coach is fired and replaced it’s just a bandaid trying to stop the massive blood loss from a massive open wound. While Pruitt might be a nice and likable guy, he is not an effective CEO of a power 5 school.

Not so sure I agree. He has a chance to right the ship by beating all the OOC schools and getting back to 8-4, which will be enough for him to keep his job. He just
won't get an extension. He may have a couple more years in him. JMO

In order to go 8-4 next year, Pruitt would only be able to lose to Florida, Georgia, Alabama (three guaranteed losses), and Ole Miss. He'd have to beat a much improved Missouri team with what seems to be a legit offense and QB, a Kentucky team he just got whipped by, and an energized South Carolina team.

I just don't see better than 6-6 being a possibility next year if Pruitt returns, but of course that is just my personal opinion. He has shown me absolutely nothing to convince me that the laundry list of flaws on this team is just because of COVID.

You can’t spend that much for buyouts and new coaches for a HC who should be fired this year...and is on track to be fired next year at the latest. The proverbial throwing of good money after bad.

The problem is he can't even do that

I don't believe this will fix the real issue. Plus good luck getting any of those guys when your coach is 4-5 losses away from taking the walk.

The best solution is to let them all walk and put every last dime in the university's coffers into the next coaching staff.

Pruitt should not change from Ansley unless there is a clear upgrade at DC. I’d say a clear upgrade is Muschamp or even Steele if he isn’t the guy at Auburn. Worst thing Pruitt can do in his make or break year is change schemes and coordinators like Dooley did with Sunseri and Butch did with Larry Scott

This is Pruitt's Defense, zero chance he changes schemes.

If you keep Pruitt make him keep this staff and succeed or hit the road with them. Why hire new coaches and give out new contracts, it will cost us more money than just stopping the misery now!
