Officiating review UT vs SC

Lots of complaints about the officiating in the WIN last night, during and after the game..... thought I would log some key indicators of inconsistent application of the rules.... all reviewed real time and slo-mo.

17:41 the first foul call on Grant... replay it and tell me if you see any contact causing the SC guy to lose the ball.

17:35 the first foul call on Kyle... ditto... went out of his way to fall away from any contact..

16:58 like for someone more knowledgeable than me to review the charge call on Turner, even the announcers said the defender did not allow him to make the play of receiving the pass.... ANYBODY???

16:55 The second call on Kyle. First the SC guy put a big elbow into his chest on the turn and once again Kyle turned with the play but kept his arms in his own plane and this time did not even leave the floor conceding the basket.

16:25 The first call on Fulky on a defensive rebound... first look closer to the ref and you will find Admiral with inside position being pushed by an SC guy much harder than ANY contact by Fulky as both guys just tried to establish position as the ball was in the air... follow the ball down the court and look at their shot and stop action with the ball approaching the rim and look at Fulky just tring to hold position as SILVA I believe classically comes over his back to get the rebound so the ref cannot play the no harm no foul deal.

Lapse of time with no real obvious missed calls....

10:57 as the ball approaches the rim on a made three ball by them look at Silva take his left arm to Grants head and knock him to the floor positioning for a rebound. Obvious foul... not a great angle but maybe should have been reviewed for an F1.

for the next few minutes watch the amount of contact 21 for SC is allowed on Admiral, not just locating him in the foul line area but displacing him with hands and arm bars. Then replaced by 13 I believe.... look at his drive and score and the amount of contact they allowed....not a chance that is not whistled on the other end. Ten times more contact than the calls on Kyle.

6:50 no call on Silva on made drive by Grant.. look at the contact... once again way more than the Kyle calls...

3:33 Once again Grant scores on Bone feed low with a ton of contact allowed and no call...

2:43 Turner called for contact at the key that was there.... but no more than a ton of no calls on the other end.

1:15 Walker and SC guy chicken fighting at key as ball is coming down the court... call went for the Chickens...

0:54 Silva obviously chickens wings and displaces a fronting Grant to create space for a lob and not only is not called for a foul but is awarded one on the shot attempt on Turner.... probably was bad angle through Grants big bod..... but should not have been a valid shot attempt..

0:24 SC big guy sets a really hard textbook illegal pick on Grant for Silva coming out to the top of the key.... they do not score but still a bad no call.

There you have the first half. Plenty of Chicken calls but most notably it was not a Goose and Gander game..... We have 11 on the bench and our other bigs with soft calls while their bigs, especially Silva get a bunch of free passes.... great composure to not let this get to you during the game.... Grant made a case as the half ended.
May get a chance to do the second half later...

AS always I welcome retorts and examples showing the error of my ways.... I do not attempt to represent the other side...

I think you are spot on with your assessment. The refs effectively represent the the other side so you don’t need to! Doug Shows is SEC basketball’s equivalent to football’s Steve Shaw. And Shaw got promoted no less! That speaks volumes about the league office.

The charge on Turner was a bad call. For it to be an offensive foul, the defender must be in legal guarding position before contact. SC player was jumping toward Turner and was never set before the contact.

There were plenty of bad calls in the game, but Alexander's second foul was a good call, and just a bad play by him. A couple of his later fouls should have been no calls though.

What were the the calls- UT versus SC? I did notice at one pt they had gone to the foul line far more frequenly than we did, but home cooking causes most of that. Being #1 puts the bulls eye on us by both the other team and the refs. Too bad we have to play both.

Agree with this 100%. Unfortunately bad and/or missed calls are a part of the game, there is no way around it. It happens to both teams. Coaching at the high school level, I always stressed to my kids that good teams execute and put themselves in a position to where bad calls can't hurt you.

We all know calls are missed for and against a team in any given game. I do think that in basketball, generally, for whatever reason more calls seem to go against the visiting team. I do believe that good teams / good players generally get more calls in games compared to poorer ones. But good teams are good for a lots of reasons. The one thing that I really believe is that players that exude more confidence in their actions on the court seem to get more calls. I really do think that referees, for some reason, somehow sense that vibe.

The worst thing that I saw happening last night was how Silva was using his elbows to play drums on young Walker's head inside battling for post position. He got away with assault several times. Good news was that Walker did not back down. And Mr. Walker, please get on the line and really work on your free throws. Do the work and you can improve. Look no farther than Williams and Alexander to see that.

I am an old basketball referee and it does, at times, amaze me how some of these guys are calling major college basketball. They don't favor anybody, but rather just do not seem to understand the basic premise......players are not allowed to gain an unfair advantage by any of their actions on the court. That is why you cannot allow a guy to tap a shooter's elbow on a long jumper and you do not call anything when two players go up face to face hard for a rebound / loose ball and have a "clean" violent collision. The first one is a foul and the second one is a play on.

Why was the shot clock violation not reviewed after the fact and the goal taking off the book........and the chickens given the ball in the backcourt? I would think that is reviewable whether the referees blew their whistle or not. I never called a game with a shot clock so I do not know the rule.

You said it nicer than what our coach used to say. He basically told us in so many words that you have to beat the other team and the referees. Also, many times people are apt to say one call or no call cost their team the game. We have heard this a ton in light what happened in New Orleans a week or so ago. We were taught and I told the teams I coached that you have to try and do everything in your power to not allow it to come down to one call. That rebound that you did not get or that free throw you miss earlier in the game can put you in a position to have a late call impact the outcome.

Silva was getting away with traveling, and at one point if a UT player breathed on him when he was at the basket, a foul was called. The one on Fulky was terrible and I called it out in the game thread. Silav lowered his shoulder, initiated the contact with Fulky and Fulky had his arms straight up and they called a foul.

I've yet to see any good explanation as to why that's a foul on the defender. What exactly is he supposed to do in that scenario? And if that's a foul, then literally every time a defender touches a shooter it's a foul. Except it's not, because later Silva blocked Admiral's shot and knocked him backwards with the body contact and no foul call.

This is why I continue to say college basketball officials are by far the worst of any popular organized sport because they are the most inconsistent I've ever seen. If you're going to call it tight, call it tight both ways; don't call a touch foul on one end and then not call anything on the other end when the shooter is knocked to the ground.

My senior years sleeping habits have me up way too early.... so instead of watching infomercials or reruns of Johnny Carson I invest it in watching replays of games.... This was done over several hours and several cups of coffee and breakfast snacks.... This time as I read over the game posts that overwhelmingly referenced how bad the game was called I thought I could back up one side with some facts rather than just realtime reactions or general statements.. that is why I invite those to point out equivalent calls in our favor to support the ever popular the calls even out theories..... we did get a couple of out of bounds calls I could not verify either way that the crowd was unhappy with... but overall I think that this was a game where the rules were not nearly evenly applied for both teams.... one of the worst examples in a while...

I don't mind a few missed calls as long as it is even. I would much rather a lot of fouls going uncalled because it really helps our physical play. I feel really bad for Kyle, as he seems to get one or two really ticky-tack fouls called against him almost every game.

They were terrible,You'd think the SEC would like having the number 1 team and have the refs call like they do for bama.

I'll agree with the premise that calls tend to even out over the game and I also believe games are not lost by one bad call at the end of a game. But, it was obvious there was a strong home court bias for SC and we still won by 22. Go Vols!! The Kentucky game will be interesting watch. I expect the same treatment or worse up at Rupp. I think the cats try to maul us similar to the way UF did in football to start with and It will be an all out mugging and then they will try to set tone to make it foul-a-thon and us being called for most of them! That's when we'll find out if being No. 1 means anything. Of course we have to be that when we get there.
