When they make horrible calls.
This game did not have any of the worst calls I have seen.
The game this year that had Vanderbilt lose to Northwestern because of a call that was HORRIBLE and that resulted in a letter of apology should result in the guy making that call no longer being allowed to work.
When J Gaffney dropped a ball and it was ruled a touchdown, after that game is reviewed the guy should never be allowed to ref again.
Look it is not an easy job, it requires you to be in shape, but they are VERY well compensated. I have a close friend who played football in the 80s for Clemson who is working his way to ACC ref currently. It is a great job to get. The pressure should be on them that if they choke and make a game altering call that is incorrect, they should lose their job.
I think the coaches challenge should be expanded as well and if the coach has a successful challenge he should get another to use in that half.
When Simms was knocked down and K Sheppard tore his helmet off by raking his facemask, it should have been a penalty. If Dooley could have thrown a challenge to have the sack reviewed it could have kept that drive alive.
Uncatchable balls thrown high like the PI call are hard, because of the leaping ability of WRs it almost has to be 5 feet or more too high above the arms of the WR. At the end of the day, some false starts will be missed but the most inexcusable part of this game is that the official who was supposed to stand over the ball during the substitution just failed. He absolutely failed at his job.
