Official Rick Byrd Thread

The last time Tennessee played Belmont was in 2010, Bruce Pearl's last season. At the time, Tennessee was ranked #18 and the game was played at Thompson Boling. Tennessee won by 1, 66-65.

Didn't Pearl also win a close game against Missouri State that year? How did taking their coach work out?

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - - For the third time in the last four years, Belmont University men's basketball head coach Rick Byrd has been named finalist for the Hugh Durham National Coach of the Year Award (Mid Majors, won in 2011), CollegeInsider.com announced this week. Byrd, who ranks eighth among all NCAA Division I head coaches in career wins with 689, led the Bruins to a fifth consecutive conference regular season championship and a ninth postseason appearance in the last 11 years. The Bruins earned two victories in the Postseason NIT to reach the quarterfinal round (NIT Sweet Sixteen). Belmont also notched victories over North Carolina, Indiana State, Middle Tennessee and Green Bay, among others, en route to a 26-10 record - the program's fourth consecutive season of 26-plus victories.

From the article, the door was left open:
"I'll be 61 at the end of this month and I just think if I were in their shoes I'd want to start a program with someone you can count on for a long period of time," Byrd said. "I can't see it. You shouldn't ever say 'never' because you never know what might happen, so I choose not to say 'never.' But I'm going to be coaching at Belmont, I feel very sure, for the rest of my coaching career."

Hate to say it, but it may be time for the Official Buzz Peterson thread. But it's gotta be official, or I'll have nothing of it.

Byrd is a better candidate than White. I think White will probably do ok, but he will use TN to build his resume and move on if he has success. Byrd for the next 10 years would do wonders for our program.

I wanted a Marshall or a Smart but I would be happy with Rick Byrd. He brings loyalty, honesty and integrity to the table and he is an outstanding coach. In fact, he is one of the best. I understand that the question is recruiting but that is hard to project going from Belmont to UT. Put anyone else at Belmont and would they recruit better? I doubt it.

Rick would have been a great hire from the beginning. He is a great coach and a loyal Tennessee guy. It's too bad we didn't get him ten years ago.

There is probably not one coach that has been mentioned on Vol Nation as a possible basketball coach that would still be the Tennessee coach in 6-7 years from now besides Rick Byrd. All of the others would have moved on to other jobs or been fired by 2020. Why not just forget age for a minute and consider the fact that Byrd is a great coach and is a Tennessee graduate. He will still be coaching at Belmont in 2020 and still winning big games. It makes since right now! Hire Rick Byrd!:good!:
