Official Rick Byrd Thread

Larry Brown is 73, Jim Boeheim is 69, Mike Kryshevski is 67. Byrd is 60. Would you hire those guys NOW?

Since when has Byrd done anything close to what those 3 guys have done? I must have missed that they all stayed at a small mid major team til they were 60.

...Tennessee loses to teams from the Atlantic Sun and Ohio Valley. Because any team can beat any other team on a given night. There IS NOT much of a drop off to mid major in college basketball in case you don't know. Guarantee you Martin had twice as many bad losses the last 3 years than Rick Byrd.

What do you wanna bet?

There's a bit of difference between Byrd and those names.

The debate is not their abilities, it's their age. BTO said hiring an old guy would be a bad idea. I simply pointed out coaches that are all 5+ yrs older than Byrd.

He's not the splash hire any of us are looking for, but I'm at the point of believing that guys who are good at their jobs can be good anywhere and he'd be a safe hire that wants to be here and would end his career here, one way or another. He's already proven, on single occasions, that he doesn't need better "talent" to compete and/or beat you. He gave Pearl's teams fits, gave Duke a run for their money and shocked UNC this year.

I think he'd recruit a Martinesque level which has proven to be good enough for top 4 in this league, but I have little doubt that the player development and on the floor coaching would be better than what we saw under Martin.

I see no way that Byrd would be a downgrade.

Never lost to a team with a losing record.
Lost to Clemson in NIT after beating Robert Morris 26-10 and Green Bay 24-7.

An awesome coach. But let's be realistic....lives and works in Nashville (nice place...it's also in Tennessee), makes good money, family settled, no petitions in Nashville that I am aware of. Life is good. SO....why come to Knoxville? What's gonna pry him out of Nashville?

$1.3m and Byrd sprints to Knoxville on foot. It's hard to turn down your alma mater in your hometown for likely 4x the money. I'd be thoroughly shocked if Byrd turned down this job.

I went to UT, have lived in Knoxville and graduated from Belmont. In my little-'ol opinion, Byrd is uniquely suited for and situated at Belmont and in Nashville... he would be nutso to uproot himself and start over at UT.

With that said, I am open to being wrong, and I believe that with true support of the AD, he could compete for a National Title within 5 years.

So it's not a bad loss unless the team is under .500 you lose to? Lol

Tally up the losses to RPI 100 or worse teams the last 3 years, that's what the NCAA defines as a "bad loss".

Plenty of coaches would be an improvement, but he would be far from a home run hire. And if people didn't like Martin's personality, they're not going to like Byrd much. He's hardly exciting.

I have news for you. Hart is not going to make the " home run hire". It's going to be someone nobody knows about like the coach from La. Tech. Wait and see.

i now that upsets you guys who live and die hanging on every word from a 16 year old kid about what he ate for breakfast and what color shoes he has on his in twitter pic.

no coach at TN has ever had a problem recruiting enough talent to win the SEC. basketball recruiting is overrated.

Might I suggest you look at Kentucky under Calipari and then come back and tell me recruiting doesn't matter

And would love to come back to his birthplace where his parents still reside! No worry about one or two and done!
