Jancek was a questionable hire from day one for Butch (just like Bajakian), and unfortunately, he's not doing much to assuage those fears going into this first game of the season. Even with the injuries and the lack of the DB coach on the sideline, we let a MAC team run about 4 plays and shut down defense as a whole. Maggitt and Barnett were both completely neutralized the almost the entirely of the game, and that proved to be the silver bullet against us.
Oklahoma, Georgia, Alabama, Arkansas, Missouri, and possibly even Kentucky and South Carolina are going to prove hard to stop given current state of Tennessee football.
Vandy is at dumpster fire that even the pure urine of Christ Almighty couldn't put out, so we are still good there...

In all I think it was a good game. I'm a little worried about our D, not sure if it was just the first game or what but D seemed exploitable.
As for offense our run game looks miles better. However Dobbs did not excite me much. There were a couple times when he would scramble and instead of making the short pass to an open wideout he would try and pick it up on the ground when he had a good number of defenders on him. I hope he doesn't automatically rely on his running and is a little more cognizant of his passing options.
As a whole I think we've improved a good bit but I'm not sure what that means until the OU game.
At 59 points the Vols will likely finish 2nd for points scored on the first week in the SEC.
BG very likely in the top half in terms of quality of opponent as well for the opening week.
On the flip side, will likely end up as the SEC team that gave up the most points
Congrats on the win everyone. Hurd and Dobbs are a treat to watch and I hope you guys realize what gifted athletes you have. Unfortunately, we cannot recruit players with the size or skill to be able to stop an offense like that.
I think you guys are being too hard on your defense. BG will probably score at will once they get into conference play and we have a ton of experience on that side of the ball. This game will likely end up being a blessing in disguise to provide your coaches things to work on with the defense and provide teaching moments.
You've made a new fan out of me and I'll be watching UT more closely this year to see what they do. Hopefully, some of you decide to check out BG again, whether it's non-conference or during the week when MACtion begins on ESPN in November.
Their playbook must be as thick as the NY phonebook. Their QB is NFL caliber and their receivers have glue on their hands. Kudos to a really really good BGSU team. I hope they run the table going forward.Secondly, people are not giving those guys (BG) enough credit. That is a good offense they have.
2 thoughts:
- My biggest concern with the secondary was how many times BG had a receiver just standing there wide open. That has to be corrected.
- Disappointed it wasn't a sellout but there was a good crowd, yours truly and family included. What was the actual attendance? Bet it was about 5000 short of a sellout.
