Official post BG game thoughts:

Jancek was a questionable hire from day one for Butch (just like Bajakian), and unfortunately, he's not doing much to assuage those fears going into this first game of the season. Even with the injuries and the lack of the DB coach on the sideline, we let a MAC team run about 4 plays and shut down defense as a whole. Maggitt and Barnett were both completely neutralized the almost the entirely of the game, and that proved to be the silver bullet against us.

Oklahoma, Georgia, Alabama, Arkansas, Missouri, and possibly even Kentucky and South Carolina are going to prove hard to stop given current state of Tennessee football.

Vandy is at dumpster fire that even the pure urine of Christ Almighty couldn't put out, so we are still good there...

In the first and early second quarter, UT ran mostly a base defense of a single deep safety with single coverage on the outside while it is apparent that Cam can cover his man, the Vols don't have a second corner or Nickle that can cover.

After getting burned on numerous deep balls, UT went to 2 deep safeties and backed the corners off. This seem to help prevent the deep balls in the second half. I seriously doubt UT will try to cover Oklahoma's wide receivers they same way they tried to cover BG's in the 1st half.

DBs need a little help with the exception of Cam, but they are young. I'm hoping Martinez being suspended had a little to do with that and the fact that BGs QB was pretty experienced.

Offense looked pretty darn explosive and I'm sure we didn't break out the big gun plays yet and also Pig was out.

Special teams were solid except for Medley's two uncharacteristic misses. The punt game was awesome. On to Okie.

Not to mention their pass plays consisted of lob it up to Dieter because eventually he'll be open.

I dont think this one game really gives credit to the bold statement. We are a good defense, we didn't have our man upstairs, and it put us in a bigger bind than the coaching staff planned for. Bad call on their part.

Also, at 21-3, I think our team got lax, then after Butch probably ripped their heads off for an hour during the lightning delay, BG went on to score 3 points the rest of the game (nearly the whole 2nd half).

I think I've typed this about 1000 times today, IT'S THE 1ST GAME OF THE FN SEASON!

However, I laughed my arse off at the part about Vandy.

That Walk-on punter Trevor Daniel is a beast. A 61 yd punt? still netted like 41 and averaged 47.

We've got some really good receivers, but more than any other players, I think J.J. and Kamara will have the biggest impacts on our season. Both looked good today, in their own rights.

It's Bowling Green, they always make things interesting, like I dunno, dashing Kyle Orton's Heisman Campaign before it could even get started back in 2003...

I know different team, different conference, and with that said I was expecting a win, sure, but I couldn't help but get flashbacks of that day 12 years ago when I saw the score at halftime.

I thought the offense looked good, and the offensive line looked improved. Makes me not dread next Saturday, and we will see just how improved they really are then. Defense did get burned pretty badly a few times, but as someone else said, they did hold that BG offense down to under 10 points in the second half. So, overall, I am impressed with Tennessee.

Oh and dear Bowling Green fans: enjoy your chip shot game against the Boilers on Sept 26. They are back to being a dumpster fire, and I have no doubt at all, you will put up 59 on them and it won't even be close. (cries)

I wonder if BGSU's Coach Monroe is "celebrating", like he promised his players?

Overall a good start. We are still a very young football team, but a much improved football team. I look forward to watching this team grow some more this season.:good!:

Where's all those "10 - 2 Homers"??!!

I'm sorry...did we lose a game I am not aware of?

They exploited a mismatch between Dieter and mosely. Then we adjusted and only gave up 10 points in second half.

I am confused,as to where/when something happened that garantees losses.

In all I think it was a good game. I'm a little worried about our D, not sure if it was just the first game or what but D seemed exploitable.

As for offense our run game looks miles better. However Dobbs did not excite me much. There were a couple times when he would scramble and instead of making the short pass to an open wideout he would try and pick it up on the ground when he had a good number of defenders on him. I hope he doesn't automatically rely on his running and is a little more cognizant of his passing options.

As a whole I think we've improved a good bit but I'm not sure what that means until the OU game.

BGU has experience on their O-line. The 2nd most in college football. They play at a fast pace. Our defence will be better. You will get a better read on it against Oklahoma. I seen where we ran 87 playes and BGU ran 85 playes. That will wear a defence down.

One thing I really liked seeing was that pooch kick we did on the kickoff after the personal foul penalty, when we kicked from the 50.

They started that drive at about the 15 opposed to the 25, if we just kicked it through the endzone.

Where's all those "10 - 2 Homers"??!!

Vols are 1-0 and beat them by 29!!! Two TDs were called back because of holding and a TD fumble recovery was not good given to us because refs felt bad for BG. Our OLine looked good which was the biggest concern.

At 59 points the Vols will likely finish 2nd for points scored on the first week in the SEC.

BG very likely in the top half in terms of quality of opponent as well for the opening week.

On the flip side, will likely end up as the SEC team that gave up the most points

Close on both counts. We scored third-highest # points in the SEC, behind Ole Miss' 76 and Florida's 61 ... and we gave up the second-most, after Kentucky (33).

[and isn't that a concerning thought ... Florida does have an offense this year, after all.... ]

Congrats on the win everyone. Hurd and Dobbs are a treat to watch and I hope you guys realize what gifted athletes you have. Unfortunately, we cannot recruit players with the size or skill to be able to stop an offense like that.

I think you guys are being too hard on your defense. BG will probably score at will once they get into conference play and we have a ton of experience on that side of the ball. This game will likely end up being a blessing in disguise to provide your coaches things to work on with the defense and provide teaching moments.

You've made a new fan out of me and I'll be watching UT more closely this year to see what they do. Hopefully, some of you decide to check out BG again, whether it's non-conference or during the week when MACtion begins on ESPN in November.

It was a great pleasure, BG Grad. Both playing you guys, and getting to meet you in these forums. Your team opened a lot of eyes with its offensive precision and talent. I think neither our DBacks nor fans were prepared for that display of skill.

Wish you guys the best in the MAC, hope you run the table.

Go Vols!

Secondly, people are not giving those guys (BG) enough credit. That is a good offense they have.
Their playbook must be as thick as the NY phonebook. Their QB is NFL caliber and their receivers have glue on their hands. Kudos to a really really good BGSU team. I hope they run the table going forward.

2 thoughts:

- My biggest concern with the secondary was how many times BG had a receiver just standing there wide open. That has to be corrected.

- Disappointed it wasn't a sellout but there was a good crowd, yours truly and family included. What was the actual attendance? Bet it was about 5000 short of a sellout.

I think that's about right. Honestly, it was so miserably hot. Props to anyone who stayed the whole game.

Just want to give a shoutout to Coleman Thonas because he honestly played fantastic.

I think he found his position

Kirk Herbstreit said on CGD that BG was good and that TN would not cover the spread. He was half right....BG is good but TN did cover the spread.

Heck yes, I would have loved to see a shut-out but it may have been just what was needed to get our D ready for the Sooners.
