Official OC search update thread...

I would think it would be difficult to lure Sanford away from being an OC at his alma mater to be an OC here

What did he say that makes you think that?

Talked about trust a lot, said resume wasn't the most important thing, but worried more about interaction with the current staff (wanted a guy that the staff knew). Said that the fans have to trust his decision.

IDK just the tone of the conversation and Debord staying a few days in Knoxville with the staff and the players makes me think he is the guy. I think Jones knows some will not find the hire exciting either by some of his comments.

He's done quite a few interviews (Vandy, Ohio State, UT) for someone entrenched. He did turn down Vandy who offered to double his salary but that would be a career killer anyways. UT could basically do the same thing easily and I think he would have to consider it very hard.

That does sound like a rationalization for an unpopular pick. Staff cohesion IS important, but so is being a damn good offensive coach. You can't just wave off the fact that DeBord hasn't coached in a while, hasn't been an OC in several years, and has never coached spread/read-option. Can you just be good at that with no experience? Maybe. In the end Jones has do his thing and he will rise or fall with the choice.

I don't think Debord is as bad as people are giving him credit for, but I don't think he is the right hire for us right now. We need an OC who has experience with quarterbacks.

I think Butch would be saying the same stuff even if Debord wasn't an option.

I know Butch would like to help an old friend out, but let's be real. If Kiffin can push his own dad out the door at USC, Butch should be able to keep from hiring a man he has worked with a few times.

I don't think its like that. If he hires Debored I don't think its just because he's trying to help out an old friend. I hope its not like that.

Although I agree in principle let's be honest Butch has more class than Kiffin could ever dream of. From a business standpoint though Butch can't allow that class and the personal ties get in the way. Which is, I think, more of your point...Kiffin just doesn't serve well as a case study IMO.

Kiffin did what had to be done for self preservation, Butch needs to do what he feels gives his team the best opportunity to win.

Anybody that thinks a Debord hire is just to do a favor or to help out a friend is seriously sick in the noggin. Do you think CBJ would put his career and his family on the line like that?

Agreed. This hire would be about Butch Jones wanting complete control over the offense, IMO.

I think Butch genuinely believes that Debord is the best hire. I think this is a case of extreme self-confidence on Butch's part. He doesn't want to change his system. He thinks we are on the verge. He has worked with Debord before and likes/respects him. He thinks Debord is the best fit for the University of Tennessee in 2015.

I personally think all of this is wrongheaded and arrogant. But maybe I'm wrong.

You're making the spread offense sound as difficult to understand as Calculus to a two year old. It just isn't that difficult. And the time off from coaching isn't that concerning to me, I think some are fishing for excuses there. The guy coached for 30 years you don't suddenly forget everything you know about coaching.

Im not a fan of him hiring DeBord just for the fact that I don't think you can grow and expand by doing the same old things. Theyve obviously worked together so they know each other so what new concepts are there to learn? You build your knowledge by expanding your horizons and get new fresh ideas. Always striving to learn more to make yourself the best you can be. I don't think we'll notice a drop off between DeBord and coach Jake and if anything we should be even better just because of the personnel were bringing in. But I think Butch's stance on familiarity and staff loyalty will be what keeps us from winning championships in the future. Butch is my coach and it's his call not mine. It's his career on the line.

Regarding this coaching search, here's the thing. Butch is really into "fit". If that is the case, no one will be offered the job until he has spent time with the present staff. This cannot and will not take place for any currently employed coach until after signing day.
With what Butch said yesterday about the timeline expect to see the interview portion of the process to be essentially concluded this week with possibly one or so exceptions. The relational part will be done as soon as signing day is over.
Further, Butch will be monitoring the CMU hiring process. There could be multiple movements occurring with this.
In my estimate Butch's mind is still open regarding the hire. The best fit cannot be determined just yet.

I don't think he would make a hire just for the purpose of helping out a friend. It looks like if he is torn between two candidates, that could help though. Needless to say, Butch knows more than I ever will, but I don't understand how he could come to the conclusion that this is the best hire. I mean if you are scared to make the announcement before NSD because you think we will lose several recruits, that should be one of your first red flags. It looks like that may happen. Another thing is who will be coaching the quarterbacks? An inexperienced GA, QC, or an OL coach who hasn't coached in a few years? If it's any of the above, it could be bad. I've not been one who has been bashing Debord. It does puzzle me though.
