Official NHL10 Thread

I think we should have tryouts for D positions seeing how it is such an important position to the team this yr. I would say frontline D guys as of right now are Mason and Cobra then second line guy me and train. i want to try and move up to a winger slot this yr since its more dumping and chasing.

I would like to stay at D and if I have to try-out I guess I can but we all should know the skill set I bring!!

Not a bad first night for me. I actually currently have more assists than goals!

I think I'm at 3 goals and 5 assists in 2 games, which doesn't count the 3 points I had in the game me and mason played that for some reason didn't count.

i need video proof of this

Had network issues last night and dropped off early. My repaired 360 came in so I swapped it out with my loaner unit and all hell broke loose with my router.

In case anyone was wondering what the "Tuner Setting" is in this year's game, this came straight from one of the developers:

Here's a quick rundown of what the Tuning Set is and how it works.

The tuner set allows up to update various gameplay parameters to tune the game. For online play their is no choice but to get the lastest version (since everyone has to play with the same settings). For offline we plan on maintaining a version history so that you can opt to stay with an earlier version if you prefer how that one played -- so on day one there will probably be a V1.00 (which is basically the demo) and V1.01. If you download the tuning set and do nothing else you will be playing V1.01 because the default is "Latest".

The idea of the whole thing is that we can fine tune the balance of gameplay in response to how the game is being played and any issues that are discovered along the way. Not all problems can be fixed this way, but since we can do this sort of update much more quickly than a title update (aka patch) it should prove to be a useful tool and a number of improvements have already been made based on feedback from the demo.

I had séveral good games last night playing OTP, though my +/- took a shelling as I've found that most people have no concept of playing defense, combined with the tons of cherry picking. Good stuff though, but i'm still having a tough time deciding which stick i prefer.

The servers were on the fritz last night, but around 1 in the morning my time, they came back up and hopefully they have fixed the problem

Looks like I didn't miss much. I can't wait to get home a screw around with my router for an hour.

w00t

I didn't have problems with open OTP, the eashl was jacked though.

Are you on now Jtrain? How are the servers. Last night with the OTP, it was still jacked up, you could get into games, but it was screwy. We got a couple of games in late late last night finally. I just hope the servers are still working.

had a good time last night running with joñesey and kano, though the scores werent super. Still need to work on rotating the puck in the zone for better shots though.

Started messing around with the sliders - found this setup. Easily the most realistic hockey I've ever played.

OK, here is what I have been using with some pretty good & realistic results. Some things (faceoffs, fighting, etc.) should be adjusted to your own personal preferences...hopefully you'll like them or they will be a good starting point for your personalized tweaks!

I use All-Star at this point, but these should work well on any skill level.

Me, Swil, and Train had a blast with the 2 games we played last night..

I would have liked to play more, but I ended up with my hands full..

his wife bought a strap on at a sex toy party, more than his hands were full. It was a heck of a time though, we'll have to roll some more tonight.

Hope you had some Astro Glide!

I'll be on tonight.

hah. you are too funny!

let's just say I am relaxed and at ease with life. I might even play defence today and not skate lower than the top of the circles.

Are you guys a professional or casual team? I wouldn't mind trying out OTP if you can stand an offensive D-man (I typically stand at the blue line and fire from the top of the circle to create rebound chances in NHL10). Shoot me an invite on XBL as fordicus if so.

We could use another blue liner... as long as you don't give up breakaways like Mason and Jtrain :zeitung_lesen:

On how to handle cheesing/glitching in NHL 2010 - I spoke to one of the actual developers of the game - EA_Redshirt. He posts on Operationsports.com. Here's how he responded to one of my comments explaining how we hand cheesers:

Swil Wrote
There's a website that allows you to look up teams before/as you play them. You can view wins/losses/ player stats.

My club does this to avoid the cheese.

The tell-tale signs are typically ridiculous goals-to-games ratio. Like a guy whose played 40 games and has 100+ goals.

I'm not sure this is a reliable approach. We matched up against the #1 team ranked team yesterday and they have a number of players with ridiculous stats and they played a good honest game against us. Unless they were on best behaviour because they know my gamertag I would say they play clean, and I can see how they would rack up some big numbers against any team that didn't know how to play tight defense. If we'd backed out on them because of their stats we'd have missed out on a great game and some education on how to play too.

The best solution to cheese in EASHL is to have more human players. A half-decent human defenseman can take most of the scoring chances for positions where a CPU goalie has weaknesses -- and a strong human goalie would take away those weaknesses too.

That said, I have to say that I'm not seeing much cheese at all in EASHL though. There are a few weak spots we are aware of and actively addressing but so far I'm fairly happy with the goal scoring balance in the game and the style of hockey it encourages.

Of course as people master the game they may uncover unforeseen weaknesses, this is why we've added the ability to tweak gameplay parameters from the server: so that we can address problems without the lengthy turnaround time of a title update. Can't fix everything this way, but it can help in a lot of scenarios.

Addressing the initial post, I agree that probably will have no effect to plead for people to not exploit weaknesses in the game. The problem with having "house rules" that you expect strangers to follow is that the lines are going to be grey and without consensus. When a player feels the other guy is crossing a line he'll likely respond with whatever cheese he knows. Some people start out with the intent to do anything it takes to win, others will switch to that mode if the other guy does something they don't like, and others still if they end up behind in a game, or if the other player is just better (and a rare few not at all). The conclusion to draw is that the game needs to be tight and not have exploits, or at least have as few as possible. Frankly, that's harder than it sounds to achieve and I'm proud so far of how well NHL10 is holding up.

One last point, there's a difference between skill and cheese. There are a lot of great players out there and the online games can be extremely competitive. Someone venturing out there having only played against the CPU could be in for quite a shock. I'm not saying anyone here is doing this, but I have seen people cry "cheese" just because the other player was skilled and they had no answer to it (as opposed to no answer existing). That is not cheese in my books. I want the game to have the sort of depth where it is possible to have prodigious skill and strategy make that much of a difference.
