No to Cutcliffe. Yes he's doing a good job at Duke, but c'mon! Isn't one the main reasons we are in need of a new HC because TN only hires in-house people?

Has anyone heard anything about Gary Crowton? I've heard he may be a target. Curious?

I don't know why I'm doing this as a Gator fan, but I can't help it. It blows my mind that names like Gruden and Cowher and Kiffin are being thrown around. If UT wants to get back in the picture fast - and you need to in order to be relevant any time soon, then you need a RECRUITER first and foremost. Everyone said that Urban's "gimicky" offense wouldn't work. Well you know what, it doesn't really matter when you've got the best athletes on the field. When you recruit the best, more often than not, you win. Unless you're Ron Zook. NFL and college football are different animals altogether. Hell, was Bear Bryant the best coach?? Probably not, but he was a great "teacher" and motivator and recruited whoever he wanted, then went out and recruited more to sit on the bench so that he wouldn't have to play against other good players.

Man I hate agreeing with a Gator... but he's right. NFL coaches only have to worry about X's and O's and keeping ego's in check. We need a strong recruiter. Hence my questions about the reality of being able to land Muschamp.

This is a once-in-a-lifetime job opening for only the best and most determined football coaches available.

Applications not being accepted. They'll find you.

I have full confidence in the UT Administration to bring in the best available head coach.

I'd love to see these names in the mix

David Cutcliff
Jon Gruden
Steve Spurrier

I agree with your #2, I'll pass on #1 and #3.

I really think of the realistic coaches Butch Davis is the best choice.

He could step in and keep some of the solid recruits this year...
He could have us turned around as soon as two years and could continue to haul in increadible talent...
He could create a great winning program again and be here about 10 years and leave the program to an up and coming assistant at that point!

Hire BUTCH!

Would anybody like Leach if TT would have been beaten by Texas? Seriously, he will stay at Tech where he belongs. C'mon people, flavor of the week? Why don't we just go after Jeff Fisher? :p

Here is the thought of the day from the mind of the DAGREEK1998<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:eek:ffice:eek:ffice" />

I honestly believe that Lane Kiffin will be the HC at Tennessee. I believe this for two reasons.

First, why make the announcement now instead of at the end of the season? The reason is that Clemson and Washington and Syracuse have already thrown the gauntlet down and are already looking hard at him. By announcing this earlier, we get to throw our hat in the ring and can start working on something with the agent.

Secondly, this allows Lane plenty of time to recruit some players that were not on Tennessee's radar. That is if we make the hire within the next few weeks.

With that said, lets start the "Jim Harbaugh for Tennessee Head Coach" thread. I tell you what, the more you read about him and see the work he has done, the more you will realize that this is the guy we really need.

Butch Davis is a good name, but I think the truth is that he is too old (58) and may be looking for a pay bump at UNC if he indeed did actually say he is interested.

Mike Leach would bring an exciting brand of football, but he wouldn't fit. Just a gut feeling. He is a gun slinger and takes some pretty outrageous risks.

Lane Kiffin would be nice but where is the track record? Obviously the Oakland thing was a debacle, but he seems like a stretch.

Everyone needs to get over the Spurrier, Cowher and Gruden vibe. Cowher and Gruden wouldn't take a huge pay cut to come to college football. Spurrier has said he isn't interested (Maybe he is, but highly unlikely)

To me the logical choice is Chris Petersen. He's 44 years old, younger than anyone else listed here (with the exception of Kiffin). He's a proven winner and brings and exciting brand of football to the field. The only thing that could keep him from coming to Knoxville is the Washington job. Petersen is collecting $850,000 / year from Boise State right now. UT can definately offer things that Boise State can't compete with in terms of salary. Urban Meyer, unfortunately, made it work going from Utah to Florida.

Just a thought

IMO I think the new head coach will break down like this:

We will go hard after Gruden and Davis, but won't get them. I think Gruden's current contract and the success of his NFL team makes it too messy and UNC will match our offer to Davis to retain him.

I think Lane Kiffin will end up at Clemson because we won't push as hard for him as Gruden and Davis and they will offer a juicy contract.

So the decision will come down between Mike Leach and Tim Brewster where Mike Leach becomes our coach.

This is just my opinion.

Sounds good to me... unless Bill Cowher somehow winds up in the mix.

I live in Minnesota and get Gopher football jammed down my neck everyday. The Gophers are having success this season with smoke and mirrors in a 2nd tier conference. Brewster can recruit. No doubt about it, but he is not the answer in Knoxville. Hopefully Hamilton is smarter than hiring a man that has had 1/2 of a good season. If the Gophers drop 2 of the next 3 games, Brewster name will be out of the conversation.

I heard he's still available and wants to get back into coaching. He gives great pregame speeches!

I think this is the guy for you guys to hire.

I don't think it would be a pay cut for Gruden. It probably wouldn't be a raise either. You want a guy like Gruden or Cowher then expect to pay them Saban type money - which is about what Gruden makes right now. The thing about Gruden that would have me concerned is that he seems to be pretty harsh on QBs (understatement?). Perhaps a fatal trait for a college coach.

Leach is the closest thing to Coach Pearl out there. Pearl started out winning with little talent just like Leach has been doing at Tech and he'll only get better with the talent available in Knoxville.
