Official March Madness Thread

Wow. Miraculous recover by Haarms. For a second there, based on his reaction, I thought is arm was going to fall off

I think Loyola and Michigan win today. Loyola in a close one, Michigan by a wide margin

If Loyola wins are any ready to admit we were just beaten by a better team?

Most of that I'll attribute to youth and inconsistency.
Our best years are ahead of us.

That team had better ball movement than anyone we had played since Villanova. No one would’ve called them an “inferior” team if they hadn’t had “Loyola” written on the front of their jerseys.

I’m not sure I would call them a better team, but I think they were much better than some people gave them credit for.

Clearly a team that we have to play well against to win, but when both teams are playing at their best I think we are a little better

They have been great. They just need a bigger win for me to say they are the better team between us and them.

I’m not sure outside of beating the top teams left to win it all would I say they’re the better team, but given we were without KA, I think they’ve at least made it plausible to say they were a pretty darn good team that would take a very good effort from us to win.

They are a dang good team. I'd say they would have been an at large team if they played in the SEC

I still wouldn't call them the better team. They beat us on a last second shot after having every single bounce go their way, us missing a key starter, and our best player sitting out and/or playing cautious defense with foul trouble. Literally, every single thing had to go their way, and it still took a last second, fall away shot to win. They weren't the better team then, and they aren't now.

Tournaments rarely reveal the best team. They reveal the fortunate and hot teams that take advantage of opponents mistakes and misfortune. We had plenty of both.

I find it amazing that Self doesn’t receive more criticism for his March failures. Two final fours in fourteen years with all the talent he has had at KU is a major underachievement. And to be honest, if Kendall Marshall doesn’t break his wrist against Creighton in the second round in ‘12. Self would only have one final four on his resume. Career record of 2-7 in regional finals, and six of those losses have been as the higher seed.

So in 15 years he’s been to 10 Elite 8s?? (Including this year)

I wouldn’t necessarily call those failures imo

Two of those are from his pre Kansas career. Still two FF’s in fourteen years is absolutely a failure. He also has terrible losses over that span. Bucknell In ‘05, Bradley ‘06, Northern Iowa ‘10, VCU ‘11, Stanford ‘14, Wichita St ‘15. Not saying he isn’t a terrific coach, he’s in the hall of fame for a reason, but he seems to be given a pass that a lot of other coaches in that situation wouldn’t be given.

Would you consider Roy’s tenure at Kansas a failure as well?

4 Finals Fours vs Self’s 2 but Self also won a NC that Roy never could

Roy was also bounced out before the 2nd weekend 5 times, same as Self fwiw

I shouldn’t have used the word failure in my response, that’s not a correct description of Self’s time at KU. I would say Self’s teams in the tournament have been underwhelming. I also think that’s a pretty apt description for Roy at KU. It certainly helps that his last two teams made the FF, but in the late ‘90s he started to take a lot of heat for poor performances in the tournament. That’s what my original point was, it seems that Self basically gets a pass for his team’s performances in March.

Gotcha. I would tend to agree with the underwhelming description but it also brings me to another interesting question.

If we have 2 HOF coaches who are “underwhelming” at the same school over 3 decades, are we overselling what Kansas really is as a basketball school? Are they really doing exactly what a great coach should do at a school like Kansas or should fans reasonably expect more? Just food for thought, I’m not sure I have the answer

Loyola is not better than us. Stop this nonsense guys.

They’ve won all their games by a total of 4 points and they’ve been hot and played their best no doubt. Them beating 9 seed k state today doesn’t change the fact that we are better than them and we blew it.

Please stop with the fluffing.
