Official Major League Soccer/US Men's National Team Thread

Sons first year of competitive soccer just ended. Lost the last game of the year 4-3 in a tournament to end up 15-1. Gonna be fun to watch this little team grow. Some good soccer being played at a young age.

My first year of "real" soccer my team tied 2 games and lost the rest. We scored one goal all year.

I don't remember the teams that were average, and I barely remember the teams that did well, but I remember that season really well.

I sit back and watch now. Coaches are paid and the boys had a really good time. They didn't give up a goal in the last 9 games until that championship game. 2 good plays by the other team on crosses to headers. One from a corner kick. One was called a goal that hit the top post and ref gave them a free kick just outside the box with a minute left saying our goalie punted outside the box on another one.
Never thought I'd have so much fun watching soccer and Fifa on xbox and all this soccer on Espn has really helped my son learn the game. He's on defense and tries to play the game just like he sees on tv and fifa.

Any of you ever been to a Columbus Crew match? I'm headed to visit family in Columbus soon and I'm curious about their environment.

It used to be the place to see a game, but they haven't been very relevant for years. I think it would depend on the opponent. They are in the playoffs right now, so I bet these games would be fun, but the season might be over by the time you get there.

Thanks for the info. We may head up this weekend but staying for Sunday's match may be hard to pull.

I would do it if you can. There are not too many opportunities to see playoff soccer. It'll be a good environment. One of my favorite sports memories is from an MLS playoff game, and I have some good sports memories (like the 1998 national championship game :pepper:).

I was never a fan of soccer until my son started playing last year on a 3-4 year old team. I ended up coaching but knew nothing about the sport. Thankfully ESPN3 has tons of matches. I developed an interest quickly and, like many Americans, jumped of the USA World Cup run bandwagon.

Being in Chattanooga I figure Columbus is my best option to throw my fandom to as I despise all things Atlanta. The Chattanooga FC, our local NPSL team, isn't to shabby either. They went to the national championship game last season and got beat by the NY Red-Bulls NPSL team.

Soccer is a lot more fun to watch when you understand some basic strategies behind offense and defense. Like the offside trap...if you don't know the sport you can't appreciate when a mistake is exposed, or great defense is played...how perfectly timed a run was, etc.

I think that sports fans who have trouble enjoying soccer are mostly comprised of people who don't understand the sport.

Good announcers can help that out. John strong is an excellent commentator for nbc sports, and the guys on the premier league broadcast are great as well.

Wow, nothing quite like losing a playoff game by 5 goals. What a disappointing season for RSL after start with like a 12 game undefeated streak, or whatever it was.

BTW, what are your thoughts of having home and away legs in every round of the playoffs? Seems like a no-brainer to me.

Reminder, USA v Columbia right now. We're up 1-0 on a PK.

Can't believe Columbia was complaining about it. Should have been a straight red when you see how deliberate the hand ball was on replay.

missed the 2nd half. What ended up happening? Man, Colombia was moving the ball nicely in the first half. Felt like we should've been down a couple.

They had a guy way offside so our guys gave up on the play and another guy from Columbia who was onside got to the ball first and scored it.

The other one Jermaine Jones played good one on one D in the corner of the box, the dude struck it hard, Jones knocked it down, but it bounced perfectly back to the guy and he crossed for a great finish.

There were like 3-4 guys standing around watching Jones. If anybody had decided to help, it would have prevented that goal.
