Imo, this is loads better than Ryan Walters. Knowles seems to have a pretty long and successful history, especially at dumpster schools like Duke and Okl state.

Didn't like the idea of getting a Washington DC and his defenses apparently don't get to the QB really which is concerning

Hope so. Seeing practice would help him determine who does and doesn't make the cut and that dictates portal needs. I'd also hope he might lend more than a hand on the actual scout and prep for Illinois.

Then again he might not want to have his fingerprints on any part of this years defense. Can't blame him for that.

He seems to be the type that wants to get his hands dirty early. I don't know how different his system is, but now would be a good time to get the groundwork laid for next year. He can get on campus, get some assistant coach interviews completed and make staff related decisions well in advance of spring/summer practice plans.

I expect a Defensive turn around like the Ken Donahue 84 - 85 season. New Schemes with talented players. Or Larry Lacewell and Monte Kiffin (1 yr) showed signs of upcoming greatness.
Most of their focus was LB and DL lines because the DBs were great. You can be a 5* or 4* LB but heart and hunger is where the results come from and most of the time they are 3*.
