Good morning everyone.
I've been in California the last few days working on a new book of business, but I've been somewhat following this.
I like all of the analysis done so far regarding the situation with Ergen and the Beaver. This lines up perfectly with what I had assumed. However, I'm not totally sold yet. Making the solid leap requires quite a bit of speculation. However, I do believe that the Beav is on the same side as Ergen, even if I'm undecided that he is working for him directly.
Here's the piece of the puzzle that i can't figure out, and perhaps its the piece of the puzzle that is confounding everyone and everything: What is Currie's interest in avoiding Gruden?
Totally ignoring Haslam for now, why would JC not be on board with JG? The easy answer is control, but no one can identify what "control" actually means in this context. Does Currie have concerns about tying his job to JG's success, and worries that he's not able to get it done? Is there a financial obligation we're unaware of? Does he have a desire for a different coach we haven't heard of yet? It's just a puzzle that I can't figure out.
Putting Haslam back into the equation, more scenarios emerge, but raise their own questions as well. It seems easy to say that Haslam may be against JG, but the only reason my be the aforementioned "control." Without knowing what that means, its pretty difficult to quantify possible objections.
Could it be that Currie and Haslam have a deal worked out from the hire? That has certainly been speculated, but that theory requires forming a belief about some pretty deep conspiracy. I generally avoid forming those types of beliefs, because they are often false. Powerful people know that conspiracy eventually bites them, and there would be enough criminal liability that they would want to avoid that if possible.
Does Haslam have a coach in mind? Is this truly a financial decision? What stake does Haslam really have in the University and the football program (how does he actually profit?).
Ultimately, if we are to believe the narrative, these questions are the crux of the issue. What possible interest could Currie have to oppose the JG hire (assuming the deal is structured as Beav has indicated)?
One possible alternative is that JC and the Haslam family is not actually obstructing the deal - but the negative press from the Beav, etc. belies that possibility (unless the argument is about timing and not objectives).
Anyways, I'm still optimistic for the narrative as presented. I'm choosing to believe, because I want to believe. We may all end up looking a fool, but that's a small price to pay for hope.
