Here's how. In the contract it states something to the extent of:
"Although executed on [DATE], this contract shall not be effective until [FUTURE DATE]."
You do this for many reasons, in this case it may provide time to get out of ESPN contracts or other duties to other parties. Contracts are often worded this way.
It's a mistake to think about this deal as one contract. It's likely more like ten contracts. I would be surprised if every contract other that the UT contract didn't have a future effective date (likely the same date).
