Official Jon Gruden Thread XXIX

"As we’ve seen with Butch Jones this season, bad coaching can create hostility with the passionate SEC fan base. That’s why Gruden would likely want to see how his son feels about having his father face potential scrutiny while he attends the university"

His son is a Junior. I doubt people will be calling for Gruden's head in his first season. If he ends up sucking (which is a possibility with any coach) we would give him until at least Year 3 before starting up the hot seat talk.

I'm not going to lose it completely if Mullen is hired -- as I do see him as better than Dooley/Butch.

But he's not Gruden and not what the Vols need.

And definitely not someone I think VFL's should be tweeting 'excitement' about

(though I do think he's a solid coach)

Good read but the below made me squirm !

The Grudens would be the most popular family on Rocky Top if the Grumors have validity. Now I’m hyped about Tennessee football for the first time in weeks. Don’t remind me that Butch is still employed. I’m ready for next season…So hopefully all of this speculation doesn’t actually result in another AAC/MAC coach.

RO you may be the only one to understand this, whether you've been in combat or not.

Fighting the Taliban, ISIS, and Al Qaeda comes with one HUGE problem. You can be patrolling a town at 2pm and not be able to tell them apart from the locals. The locals won't tell you who they are because they are scared, and they aren't always going to attack you because it may not be the best time, but they could be all around you.

The hardest part is figuring out who is who. There are people on here who's first post is so informative you have to decide: friend or foe.

A little more to ad to this, if I may. When dealing with the SIGs/SEGs in Iraq, we were running into a situation where an illiterate population had to seek out the local Imam for anything regarding the Holy book. They couldn't read it, SIGs/SEGs knew this and would tell the Imams what to tell the locals as a way of coercing the locals into believing what ever they wanted. Mass manipulation through a trusted source.

I hope Gruden brings his son Duece as the S&C coach. That's all that I ask.

We aren’t going to take the time to put a deal together, for Gruden to tell us he doesn’t want to coach. That part has been vetted.

That would be handled in first call. “ If all circumstances were in line including money.. would you come?”

If I was Gruden’s son and in college, I would want my dad as the coach. I wasn’t the best at landing the hot chicks in college. It seems like if your dad is the rockstar coach of the university.......the side benefits could be satisfying

And unless he's a total facade, a myth, a fraud...I think Gruden would win. Even if not to the level we as fans REALLY want, we'd at least field a team who have the condition to play for 3 quarters without being 30% down in players due to conditioning. We'd compete.

And, at worst, he'd do his time and have built one hell of a brand recognition and cupboard stock for the next guy.

That family meeting has probably been happening continuously for over 5 years. That isn't an order some pizza and decide conversation.

I have a feeling tonight Mr Gruden is going to be all smiles and wearing the Orange Tie tonight and we will all be saying “It’s Happening” and the gifs will be amazing!

No insider info just a gut feeling

Rather he goes bold with a checkerboard, but I’d settle for Orange. Orange is good.

Your thread is titled, "It appears that Gruden in happening..."

Is this based on a guy feeling, or something more substantial.

Not a gut feeling. To answer @Tmac1414 <https://tennessee.forums.rivals.com/members/79159/> , yes something happened to make me feel this way.

On a scale of 1 - 10 (1 being UT or Gruden has thought about reaching out to one another, and 10 being the ink is almost drying)...

Where are you right now?

@Hutch 7 <https://tennessee.forums.rivals.com/members/40283/> @ChattaVol06 <https://tennessee.forums.rivals.com/members/7096/> @Word_of_Pards <https://tennessee.forums.rivals.com/members/11410/> @LWSVOL <https://tennessee.forums.rivals.com/members/52/> @Swan Man <https://tennessee.forums.rivals.com/members/2188/> - y'all can chime in too if you wish.

I have not gone above 5% since this began. I don't have anyone indicating to me its going to happen. It could. There has been a lot of talk. That is why I remain 5%..

As in done deal or family meeting and mulling it over?

I'm under the impression that it's the former.

I tend to be more skeptical than optimistic as an MO, just fwiw.

I'll eat crow if I'm wrong, but figured y'all would like some good news.

The bar should be set a little higher than "better than Butch"... Coach Klein from The Waterboy would be better than Butch.
